In Ukraine, we're transporting patients via ambulances across areas near the front lines in the east, south and northeast of the country. Hospitals are very overwhelmed from the heavy missile attacks, and there's a need for patients to be transferred to facilities with either more capacity or that offer treatment catered to specific injuries. MSF Paramedic Dmytro Bilous sheds light on the process behind transporting patients.

Info
Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is the world's leading independent international medical relief organization, implementing and managing medical projects in close to 72 countries worldwide and as a worldwide movement of 25 associations, 24 sections, 17 offices and 6 operational entities. Our work focuses on emergency medical and humanitarian relief. We are guided by the principles of independence, neutrality and impartiality, as described in the MSF Charter. We implement our medical programs in areas where no health or sanitary systems exist, or where health structures are overwhelmed by the needs of populations. For 50 years, we have been providing medical assistance to people affected by armed conflicts, natural disasters, disease epidemics, malnutrition crises and other emergencies. We offer medical and humanitarian assistance to people based on their needs - irrespective of race, religion, gender or political affiliation. We observe neutrality in situations of conflict, and impartiality in the name of medical ethics. To ensure our independence, the majority of our funding is provided by private donations from members of the public. Additional funding may come from foundations, governments and international institutions.

On September 19, 2023, after much public pressure from TB activists and the #TimeFor5 campaign, Cepheid’s parent company Danaher Corporation, announced a price drop from $9.98 to $7.97, for the GeneXpert #TB test. They also committed to an annual third-party assessment of the production costs of their tests, to ensure the tests’ prices remain ‘at cost’. However, almost a year later, no information has been made available on the audit. The current prices of the TB test and other GeneXpert tests are not backed by any evidence from Danaher or Cepheid of their true production costs. These tests are unaffordable for many in low- and middle-income countries that often have the highest disease burden. A third-party audit is a step that could lead to fairer pricing for these lifesaving tests. We, alongside Treatment Action Group (TAG) and Partners In Health, urge Danaher and Cepheid to take crucial actions by December 2024 to ensure an independent, rigorous and transparent audit that involves the affected communities. We recommend: 🎯 Establishing an audit advisory committee of key stakeholders, including civil society 🎯 Using audit methodology that follows best practices 🎯 Including all Xpert tests eligible for Cepheid’s Access Programme for high-burden disease countries in the audit 🎯 Sharing all audit findings publicly and transparently 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dmnMv6Vq

We’re deeply alarmed by the high rates of violence against women in and around displacement camps in eastern DRC. According to a survey conducted in April by our epidemiological and medical research arm Epicentre, more than one in 10 young women reported being raped in displacement camps in and around Goma—proving the overall frequency of physical, psychological, and sexual violence is still very high in this area. Rebecca, a young woman sheltering at a displacement camp in Goma, gives a glimpse into the hardships influencing her daily life: “Life has become complicated.”

Where can Rohingya people seek safety? This weekend marks seven years after the Myanmar military launched a major campaign of violence targeting the Rohingya people. In 2024, they have found little reprieve from hardship, even after fleeing for safety. Whether caught in the crossfire of an intensifying conflict in northern Rakhine state or forced to live behind barbed wire in the Cox’s Bazar camps in Bangladesh, Rohingya people are trapped and forgotten. In northern Rakhine, access to health care is almost nonexistent. MSF teams in Bangladesh are providing care to new arrivals of Rohingya people, many of whom have injuries from gunshots and landmine explosions. Between August 5 and 17, MSF teams in the camps of Cox’s Bazar treated 83 Rohingya patients with violence-related injuries, nearly half of whom were women and children. In the camps, 1.2 million people are living behind barbed wire fences, with limited access to basic needs. https://lnkd.in/eHwaVF6K

"The act of humanitarianism comes down to one thing: Individual human beings reaching out to those who find themselves in the most difficult of circumstances. They reach out one bandage at a time, one suture at a time, one vaccination at a time." Honoring #WorldHumanitarianDay
