What is a #carbon budget and why do we need one? 🤔 The carbon budget is the total amount of #CO2 that can be emitted globally and while still giving us a chance of limiting temperature rise within 1.5°C or 2°C to prevent global warming. 🌡️ Global experts, including the IPCC, set this budget based on #climate science, and it serves as a guide to policy. The latest Carbon Gap report highlights 2️⃣ key elements regarding the carbon budget: 💰 Although the budget is presented globally, not all countries have emitted equally. Countries with high historical emissions have already exceeded their fair share. 📈 For these countries, every ton of CO2 emitted is exceeding their budget. Countries with large historical emissions will need #CDR to not only counterbalance any 'residual' emissions that remain by the year of #netzero but also to address all emissions in excess their budget. 🌱 Stay tuned as we be break down further aspects of the paper and explore the future role of #carbonremoval! 📖🕵🏼 For those who want to read the full report written by Robert Höglund and Eli Mitchell-Larson, here's the link 👉🏼 https://loom.ly/tPDmheo

Enabling permanent CO2 storage – for a bright future of all generations on our planet.
Info
Limiting global warming to safe levels will only be possible by globally deploying carbon removal (CDR) solutions at the scale of billions of tons of CO2. Neustark is a leading provider in this rapidly growing field, having developed a solution to permanently store CO2 from the air in recycled mineral waste such as demolished concrete. Our first solutions have been deployed in Switzerland and Europe and are already leading to a significant removal of CO2 from the atmosphere. We are currently substantially scaling up our operations and impact. By 2030, we aim to remove and store permanently one million tons of CO2 every year. Founded in 2019, neustark AG is based in Berne, Switzerland, and is a team of around 30 people (as per beg 2023). Together, we enable permanent CO2 storage for a bright future of all generations on our planet.

✨🕵🏼 Seeing is believing Why? Carbon removal is often hard to grasp because we're tackling an invisible challenge: capturing CO2, an invisible gas, and making it even more invisible through permanent storage. 🫧 The process behind our technology is highly complex, but we're committed to making it understandable and accessible. With this in mind, CarbonX Climate and an amazing group of people visited us at one of our sites in Zürich! 🚀 Lisa Braune led the tour, explaining how neustark captures and durably stores CO2 right there with our partner Spross. It was a great opportunity to show how we turn climate commitments into tangible action. 🌱 Thanks to Megan Hunold, Sebastien Dewarrat, and everyone who joined us – we had a lot of fun and enjoyed engaging conversations! We look forward to continuing to building these relationships and can’t wait to keep showcasing our technology.

📢 All excess emissions must be removed - that's the title of the latest Carbon Gap report. This report, written by Robert Höglund and Eli Mitchell-Larson, takes a deep dive into which #emissions we should focus our carbon removal efforts on - not just now, but after we reach #netzero. 🌱🌍 Key takeaways 💡 1️⃣ Large emitters have no carbon budget left. Countries with significant historical emissions are now starting to accumulate #carbon debt. 2️⃣ All excess emissions beyond these budgets - past, present, and future - must be addressed through carbon removal. 3️⃣ What exactly are 'residual emissions'? The paper introduces terms such as 'excess' and '#CDR-optimal' that are meant to provide more precision. Over the next few posts, we'll break down these concepts and highlight different aspects of the paper. 🔦 Stay tuned as we explore everything from carbon budgets and carbon debts to the future role of #carbonremoval! 🕵🏼 For those who can't wait, here's the full paper 👉🏼 https://loom.ly/tPDmheo

We're excited to announce our collaboration with Gold Standard on revising the methodology for accelerated #carbonation of concrete aggregate. The updated version broadens its scope to include a wider range of reactive mineral wastes e.g. residual water or slags and presents a more robust #MRV method that incorporates the latest advancements in carbon dioxide removal #CDR. We invite you to share your feedback, and help shape the future of CO2 storage. Let’s continue removing #CO2, tonne by tonne! 💪🌍
First published in March 2022, the Gold Standard Methodology for Carbon Sequestration through the Accelerated Carbonation of Concrete Aggregate has been applied by the carbon removal organisation neustark, with the first issuance of certified carbon credits in April 2024. In general, demolished concrete is collected at Concrete Recycling Facilities (CRF) and crushed into concrete aggregate before it is used as a substitute to gravel and sand in fresh concrete or road construction, or before it is landfilled. This methodology facilitates technology-based CO2 sequestration (carbonation) with biogenic CO2 in demolished concrete (concrete aggregate) before it enters downstream processes. We are currently consulting on a revised version of the methodology that expands the applicability scope beyond demolition concrete so that it may be applied to the carbonation of a wider range of reactive mineral wastes (e.g. by-products of residual waste from municipal waste treatment). The revisions also account for developments in the field of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) by considering durability and reversal risks, as well as additional safeguards and accounting measures. We are seeking feedback on specific areas of the updated methodology, with public comment open until 22 November 2024.

Last week, our head of carbon removal, Lisa Braune, was a panelist at the Carbon Forward event in London. The discussion focused on carbon removals, who's paying and why. 💰 A powerful statement came from Leigh Hudson, who asked: "If we don't do it, who else will❓" This resonated throughout the event and truly highlights the urgency we all feel to advance the #CDR market forward. 🌱 It underlines the reality: we are still in the innovator and early adopter phase and it's companies like International Airlines Group (IAG) that need to take bold steps now, to lower the hurdles for future CDR buyers. 🏃🏼♂️ Many thanks to Lisa Braune, John Barry, Paul Zakkour and all the participants for their #inspiring insights on the future of this vital industry. 🚀 Let's keep pushing to take the CDR market from where it is today to where it needs to be tomorrow to scale durable #carbonremoval. 🌎 🐥📸 If you’re one of the lucky recipients of our little ducklings, we’d love to see our ducklings travel. Share your photos in the comments below so we can follow their journey around the world!
