🌊🌍 „We need to respect the oceans and take care of them as if our lives depended on it. Because they do." - Sylvia Earle At Open Climate Solutions, we are inspired by this vision and are committed to playing our part in #OceanRegeneration. 🌱 We’re excited to share a short movie showcasing our first project with Kilchoan Melfort Trust, turning this vision into reality. Our project focuses on #RegenerativelyCultivatingSeaweed in Scotland’s pristine waters, which sequesters carbon and absorbs excess nutrients from the ocean. From the seaweed, we produce a nutrient-rich biostimulant and biochar for permanent carbon storage. The biostimulant helps farmers regenerate soils, improve crop yields, and withstand climate stresses while reducing reliance on synthetic fertilizers. 🌿💪 The biochar offers a high-quality carbon removal solution with applications in construction materials and agriculture. While seaweed is not a silver bullet for climate change, we firmly believe it plays a key role in regenerating our oceans and terrestrial environments. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Adrian Macleod, Marnik Van Cauter, Toby Dewhurst, Nate Baker and the Kames Fish Farming team for their support and commitment throughout this project. A special thanks to our advisors, especially Jens Leifeld, Rienk Smittenberg, Jannis Wernery, Markus Weinmann, Jaboury Ghazoul, Petrissa Eckle, and Chris Davies for their guidance to date. We also want to thank Rhianna Rees for joining us on harvest day and Lizzie MacKenzie for producing the film. Finally, we are deeply grateful to our donors that enabled the realisation of this project. Your continued support is invaluable to us. 🙏 Follow, join and support us to help scale this #NaturePositive solution 🙌 Scottish Association For Marine Science Kilchoan Melfort Trust Kelson Marine Co. Developing nature-based solutions that support biodiversity in addition to mitigating and reducing greenhouse gases
Info
The purpose of the tax exempt non-profit association is the research, development and implementation of climate protection projects and measures in Switzerland and abroad in the fight against global climate change. We pursue our purpose in particular by promoting and financing nature-based climate solutions that support biodiversity in addition to mitigating and reducing climate-damaging greenhouse gases. We believe in open sourcing because we recognize the importance of collaboration and knowledge sharing in solving complex environmental problems. By openly sharing our knowledge, we hope to accelerate the growth of climate solutions and maximise our impact. We are currently developing a regenerative seaweed farm pilot in Scotland that develops and open sources new technologies, tests novel polyculture approaches (multiple organisms with co-benefits) and delivers process improvements across the seaweed value chain from seeding to primary processing while also creating jobs in rural communities. Reach out if you are interested!

Great to have you with us Rhianna Rees and share thoughts on how to collaborate to push the sector 🙏
Amazing to be out on the water yesterday to see the seaweed harvest at Kilchoan Melfort Trust with Marnik Van Cauter and the teams at both Open Climate Solutions and Kames Fish Farming. Thank you for having me along. The entire sector is figuring out how to optimise operations through mechanisation and it's great to see some of the scalable, collaborative ideas that are being utilised, such as this one. Here's to more of the same! #seaweed #harvest #oceanfarming #regenerativefarming #blueeconomy #oceanbusiness #auqaculture

The kelp is growing beautifully at Kilchoan Melfort Trust. We're excited to support Marnik Van Cauter and the team with harvesting it in a couple of weeks time. 🙌 Interested to see what's happening below the waterline? No worries! Check out the farm design, which we've made available #OpenSource on our GitHub account. Even comes with real life pictures! 😊 https://lnkd.in/ecWmh2_Q
It's good to be back in Scotland, It's even better to see such growth on the seaweed farm! @Open Climate Solutions Kilchoan Melfort Trust

Bojan, Daniel and Mátyás will be in beautiful Lisbon next Monday to Wednesday to attend the #WorldOceanSummit hosted by Economist Impact. The summit will focus on #OceanHealth, industry strategies to accelerate the #SustainableOceanEconomy, and #OceanClimateSolutions. PM them if you're there and want to meet up! 🙏

Thanks for sharing some #seaweedromance, Marnik Van Cauter! Great pleasure to work with you and the Kilchoan Melfort Trust team on this beautiful project. We're excited to be back soon to support you with the harvest. 🙏 #regenerativecarbonremoval
I am currently spending some time in beautiful Tasmania to visit Helen Conlon. Before heading for the southern hemisphere we seeded our new kelp farm at Kilchoan Melfort Trust with the help of Open Climate Solutions. Luckily the team on the ground supply me with bi-weekly updates and drone footage of the farm to check for storm damage and growth rate! Scotland has had some severe winds over the last few weeks and the farm handled it very well. It is also the time of year when we can start seeing some significant progress on the grow lines. Receiving drone shots like this get me excited for the upcoming harvesting season which is slowly approaching!

Please welcome our newest member: Open Climate Solutions. Open Climate Solutions is a Swiss non-profit organisation whose mission is to develop nature-based climate solutions that also support biodiversity and create benefits for society. They are convinced seaweed is one of those solutions, and their ambition is to standardize seaweed farming and do research on bio-stimulants and biochar as nature-based climate solutions. "We strongly believe that at the point where the seaweed industry is today, we need cooperation rather than competition. As a non-profit organisation, we hope to encourage collaboration, as we open source information to help other for-profit companies in the seaweed space to build their businesses".
