In the midst of burgeoning growth of clean energy demand from data centres, there are warning signs that the renewables market must innovate – quickly – or risk losing its grasp on the new opportunities unfolding. The sheer size of new data centres is growing from 10-50 MW to 150-300 MW, with permitting for new sites often requiring lengthy and costly grid upgrades. Some players are already eyeing new sites close to nuclear and gas infrastructure to avoid grid bottlenecks and address the shortfall in affordable firm clean energy supply. The EEG subsidy scheme currently operates as a one-sided Contract for Difference (CfD), which is incompatible with the EU's mandate for two-sided CfDs.
