Challenge: The Center for Media Production at the Leipzig University faced significant workflow challenges in managing their multimedia services. With a team handling a variety of roles—from producers and directors to camera operators and editors—they were responsible for creating live broadcasts, science communication videos, and promotional content for university departments. Despite their efforts, they encountered issues with downtime and the need for technical improvements. Additionally, communication with clients, who often lacked video production knowledge, was a persistent challenge. The team experimented with various project management tools like Excel, Microsoft Teams, Trello, and Flow Production Tracking by Autodesk, but none fully addressed their needs. Solution: After evaluating different tools, the Center for Media Production found that ‘PRODUCER - Maker Machina’ was the most effective solution for their workflow challenges. Florian Albrecht, a producer and a key member of the team, highlighted how PRODUCER significantly improved their organization and communication. The tool’s design and ease of use were major factors in their decision. PRODUCER consolidated their production steps and integrated review functionalities, making it easier for clients to be involved in the production process. Florian noted that clients felt more engaged through the review tools and comments, enhancing overall collaboration and efficiency. Results: Since adopting PRODUCER, the Center for Media Production has seen notable improvements in their workflow and communication. The Saudi Film Confex in Riyadh wasn’t just a gathering—it was a powerful testament to a nation on the brink of a cinematic revolution. Meeting with production companies, filmmakers, and film schools from across the region revealed an undeniable momentum, as Saudi Arabia rapidly positions itself as a new epicenter for storytelling, innovation, and cultural transformation; fuelled by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's Saudi Vision 2030. Some of my key learnings: 1. Cultural Renaissance: Saudi Arabia is focused on developing a thriving arts and entertainment scene, with the film industry playing a central role. 2. Infrastructure Investment: Mega-projects such as NEOM, the world’s longest subway, emphasizing sustainability and cutting-edge technology. 3. Empowering Women: The government is actively encouraging female participation in the workforce, including putting women behind the wheel—a literal step toward empowerment. As an outsider, I was welcomed with open arms. Whether in the conference halls or on the streets, the hospitality was overwhelming. People were kind, not because they wanted something, but out of genuine goodwill. And while I was often jokingly called “James Bond” by some, the warmth and friendliness I encountered were the real deal, with genuine interest in what we were doing. However, amidst all the positive energy, one issue stood out that struck a chord with me. Many filmmakers expressed frustration with using third-party software like Monday.com, Notion, and Trello, which, as we all know, aren’t tailored to the specific needs of filmmakers. The existing tools were only adding frustration rather than streamlining their workflows. The moment I introduced PRODUCER - Maker Machina to them, their faces lit up with excitement, eager to get started. Many Saudi filmmakers also mentioned feeling left behind by solutions that didn’t accommodate their language or cultural needs. From Saudi Arabia’s openminded filmmakers, we’re reminded that creativity knows no boundaries. Their openness, positivity, and unstoppable drive are a source of inspiration for us all. Together, we have the power to rise, to create, and to shape a future where stories transcend borders and connect us on a deeper level. Today, we want to take a moment to celebrate one of our longest-standing team members—our loyal front-end lead developer, Mohamed Moubarak. Interestingly, Mohamed was hesitant to join PRODUCER at first—he didn’t want to risk letting us down. When we finally convinced him to come aboard, he poured his heart into the project from day one. With an application as massive as PRODUCER, boasting over a hundred thousand lines of code, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Yet Mohamed approached every challenge with more than just technical expertise. He put himself in the shoes of our users, thinking about how each feature would impact their experience, and then he owned it. What truly sets Mohamed apart is his mindset. Working closely with our product owner Rasmus Sievers, designer Gaston Gonzalez, and under the leadership of Co-Founder & CTO Paul-Emile Joëssel, Mohamed tackles every complexity and transforms intricate problems into smooth, intuitive experiences for our users. His trustworthiness and reliability are matched only by his humility and unwavering belief in the PRODUCER dream. One of his greatest contributions has been the Calendar—a massive feature with countless moving parts and complex edge cases. Mohamed took this challenge on single-handedly and created something epic. Our lead developer, Mohamed Nagah, even said, "This calendar exceeded all our expectations." Fresh off the press on CineD: At this year’s IBC 2024, PRODUCER - Maker Machina was showcasing the Maker Machina Mark II update of their product – the all-in-one production software developed to streamline the entire production process on a single platform. By centralizing all assets, the company’s aim has been to consolidate everything into one production tool, and this update’s new features should streamline workflow even more. So, let’s have a look at what’s coming up. We first looked at PRODUCER in February and were quite impressed with their concept. In fact, we are still impressed, and CineD has announced them as the winner of the CineD Streaming / Remote Production / Cloud Workflows Award for IBC 2024! Back in February, 4000 people were testing the software, and MRX Productions had also evaluated the software in real-world testing. Now, they’ve reached almost 10,000 users, and after hitting that milestone, they’re rolling out some new features, which you can read about in detail here. As the company continues to grow, Nino Leitner, AAC spoke with Xaver Walser at IBC - International Broadcasting Convention about their plans and what features they are most excited about in the (near) future.
