Navigating the job search can be challenging for anyone, but for individuals with disabilities, there are often additional factors to consider. In an interview with Tiffany A. Yu, CEO and founder of Diversability®, she shared some valuable advice on how disabled candidates can advocate for themselves and find inclusive opportunities. 𝗘𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗝𝗼𝗯 𝗢𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 In the first stage of job searching, assess whether a company’s hiring process is open to disabled candidates by evaluating the language used in the job descriptions. Companies that are truly inclusive will use language that is mindful of diversity, avoiding terms or requirements that might unintentionally exclude candidates with disabilities. 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆? A key question disabled job seekers face is whether to disclose their disability during the hiring process. Tiffany reminds us that this decision is entirely up to the individual. While there are legal protections in some places to ensure disclosure is not required, those who need specific accommodations may choose to share this information early in the process. However, this choice remains personal and should be based on what feels right for the candidate. 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 If a candidate has specific access needs during the hiring process, such as requesting accessible interview formats, self-advocacy ensures these needs are met. Similarly, once a position is secured, disabled employees should communicate their accessibility needs to make sure they are able to perform at their best. Learning from executives is one of the most powerful ways to grow in your career. In this month’s newsletter, we had the opportunity to interview April Little, founder of Little Talent Group. She shared her journey from navigating her own career development to coaching top executives. Reflecting on her journey coaching at an executive level, a key part of her guidance is the 5P framework: Possibility, Perception, Presence, Performance, and Promotion. 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 ➤ One of the first steps to success is learning that your career goals are achievable. By creating a clear roadmap and assessing your strengths and skill gaps, you can visualize the path forward and take actionable steps to get there. 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 ➤ How you consistently show up at work shapes how others perceive you. Your reputation is built on these perceptions, and it plays a crucial role in whether you're considered for leadership opportunities within your organization. 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 ➤ Presence goes hand in hand with perception and is closely tied to communication. By amplifying the skills you already possess, you can strengthen your impact and make your presence known through your work and connections. 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 ➤ Performance isn’t just about completing tasks—it’s about optimizing relationships, gaining visibility, and filling gaps where needed. Strong performance ensures you're seen as a valuable asset beyond your immediate responsibilities. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 ➤ Understanding the promotion process is also important for career development. Keep up with promotion cycles, build relationships with key decision-makers, and position yourself strategically whenever you have the opportunity. 💫 If you’re looking to climb further up the executive ladder, check out more of April’s career advice in this month’s newsletter: https://lnkd.in/gRVW2GRn #careeradvice #careerdevelopment #executives
