The DroneHub is an innovative testing ground designed for autonomous robots, including drones and climbing robots. It is located within NEST, the experimental research and innovation platform of Empa. ROK Architekten conceived a triangular steel structure covered in metal netting. This allows robots to be tested in realistic outdoor conditions. Lab spaces built from timber complement the aviary like structure. The facades are clad in reclaimed cement boards. ROK wird am BROWNBAG-LUNCH der Schweizer Baumuster-Centrale Zürich die gemeinsame Entwicklung einer CO2-optimierten und multifunktionalen Decke im Projekt #STEP2 am #NEST der Empa präsentieren. Das neu entwickelte Produktionsverfahren beruht auf 3D-gedruckten, vollständig wiederverwertbaren Schalungen. On 29. August 2024 STEP2 has been inaugurated: After 5 years of research, development and planning the new NEST-Unit opened its doors. The two-story building at the very top of NEST combines a range of innovations, all of which are aimed at reducing materials and energy consumption. To achieve an impact beyond the project, all innovations are marketable and will become future products at the respective industry partner. We would like to thank our clients BASF, Empa and NEST for their visionary project setup and great collaboration throughout the project. Furthermore, we are grateful to have worked with such a dedicated team of industry and research partners as well as planners. STEP2 is an innovation and research unit at the NEST platform. It combines latest research in energy simulation, digital fabrication and upcycling of materials. The unique innovations demonstrated here for the first time are: A structurally and material optimized, multi performance concrete ceiling, which integrates acoustic absorption, diffusion and a thermal buffer. A helical stair that showcases a dramatic reduction of concrete use thanks to high-performance materials. Interior cladding, made from upcycling of fibrous waste using a novel water-based binder. A closed-cavity-façade with natural ventilation of the cavity. All innovations in STEP2 are developed by industry partners and are market ready with the goal to provide a positive sustainability impact on a larger scale.
