With its expedition in Guadeloupe’s mesophotic zone, UNDER THE POLE successfully completed the first chapter of its DEEPLIFE series, through which it studied marine animal forests in Arctic, temperate and tropical waters. On this mission in the southern Caribbean Sea, the expert divers collaborated with world-renowned fish expert and Rolex Awards Laureate Luiz Rocha to uncover more about ecosystems found between 30 and 150 metres under the ocean’s surface. Combining scientific rigour with deep-sea exploration, the team helped further the understanding of these underwater worlds, and how best to protect them. This is our intense white dial. Its striking appearance is achieved through electroplating, a technique that has been tried and tested in many fields. The brass base plate is immersed in a series of electrolytic baths to coat it with very thin metallic layers. On this dial, we use gold, nickel and then silver. After the surface is brushed, it is submerged in a final bath to intensify the brightness of the white colour, revealed by the light. Electroplating protects, but above all, embellishes. The Azores Deep-Sea Research (ADSR) group is on a mission to make deep-sea exploration more widely accessible. The team of marine scientists has developed the revolutionary Azor drift-cam, a small, low-cost device that can dive to a depth of 1,000 metres to gather crucial video evidence of life on the sea floor. Supported by the Rolex Perpetual Planet Initiative, this innovative high-resolution imaging system is changing research in the deepest parts of the ocean – and shaping how to protect them. The Nusa Penida Marine Protected Area has helped conserve more than 20,000 hectares of coral reefs, mangroves and seagrass meadows off the south coast of Bali, Indonesia. Building on this success, Mission Blue / Sylvia Earle Alliance Hope Spot Champions Rili Djohani and Wira Sanjaya are working to ensure the long-term resilience of these biodiverse marine ecosystems. They aim to inspire younger generations to become guardians of the ocean.
