🎃 "Trick or Treat… or Safety Risk?" 🍬 As Halloween brings a surge of treats, spooky stories also emerge in the food safety and regulatory world. While kids go door-to-door seeking candy, food safety experts are on the lookout for hidden risks that can sometimes be downright eerie! 👻 Here’s what Halloween can mean for the food industry and some hair-raising examples: 🍬 Color Scares: Red Dye No. 3, commonly found in Halloween candies like candy corn, has been controversial for decades. Linked to potential health risks, including cancer in high doses, it’s been banned in cosmetics but still allowed in food in the U.S. due to regulatory loopholes. Recent pushes from groups like the Environmental Working Group aim to finally get it banned from food too, highlighting ongoing concerns about artificial dyes during candy-heavy seasons like Halloween. 🍫 Titanium Dioxide in Candy: Titanium dioxide is a popular ingredient that gives candy its vibrant color. It is often found in popular candies. Despite its widespread use, studies by the European Food Safety Authority have shown potential dangers from titanium, leading to it being banned in Europe. Such cases are prompting some companies to consider safer options for additives in their products. 🧪 Chemical Additives and Allergen Alerts: Many Halloween treats also carry allergen risks due to labeling oversights, with undeclared allergens posing a real threat to those with severe allergies. Just this past year, recalls were issued for candies containing undeclared allergens and even plastic pieces, proving that vigilance is essential, not just during Halloween, but year-round. Halloween is fun but can be a regulatory nightmare, reminding the food industry to keep safety front and center. Whether it’s with haunted packaging or extra-sweet flavors, compliance ensures all treats—no tricks—are safe. 👻 🍬 Happy Halloween! #Halloween #FoodSafety #RegulatoryCompliance #TrickOrTreat #Halloween2024 #SGSDigicomply
