Today in the Financial Times, I published a piece as part of their business school case study series on "Can Benefit Corporations Solve AI Governance Challenges?" 🌐 Leading AI companies like xAI and Anthropic have embraced the #benefitcorporation model, a corporate form that aims to balance their economic interests with broader societal concerns. And OpenAI has announced they will too. ⚖️ With the Trump administration pulling back on AI safety regulations because they are “barriers to American AI innovation" what steps (if any) should companies be taking to ensure their products don't harm the public? Can this voluntarily adopted structure make a difference or is it simply "governance washing?" If the latter, given the changes under Trump, should they just drop the pretense that they care? 🔍 Alternatively, while arguably robust public policies are essential, in their absence, if companies do believe the topic of AI safety is a critical one, what governance arrangements can they put in place to ensure that? What sort of accountability mechanisms can be put in place to support safety?
