The European Patent Office (EPO) has carried out a study to identify the universities from which start-ups use research results. Three Swiss universities made it to the Top 12. It is therefore not surprising that Swiss start-ups also stand out in Europe when it comes to the number of patents, confirming that Switzerland is the place to be for deep tech start-ups. Receiving the De Novo approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) allows Distalmotion to market the Dexter Surgical Robot for adult inguinal hernia repair. 90% of inguinal hernia repairs in the United States are currently performed in the hospital outpatient and ambulatory surgery centers. Dexter’s mobile design, combined with its small form factor, make it particularly well-suited to these environments, allowing hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) to optimize resources while still accessing the latest technologies and best-in-class surgical tools. With more than 1,300 patients successfully treated in Europe, Distalmotion’s extensive experience has paved the way for bringing this innovation to the U.S. market. For once, Switzerland comes off badly in a ranking: according to the 'Not Optional' campaign led by Venture Index, Switzerland has a stock option policy that is particularly disadvantageous for start-ups. Switzerland is in 25th and last place with fewer points than any other country in the comparison. https://lnkd.in/gM3Qeh7E According to the initiative, “Switzerland is one of the few ‘ripe for change’ countries that have made no meaningful progress in stock option reform since the launch of the Not Optional campaign.” In contrast, three largest economies – Germany, France, and the UK – have reformed stock option policies so they match or exceed the US. VCs are professional optimists. This was clearly evident at yesterday's VCs on stage event hosted by Seca. The investors in attendance had only one thing to think about – the lack of exits. Otherwise, even in the current situation, they saw several reasons to be optimistic The Swiss VC scene has grown up. Several VCs that were founded 15 or more years ago were able to present convincing figures on their returns in their pitches. The mature VCs with their impressive track records are also attracting more interest from pension funds. In addition, the decision-makers in pension funds increasingly come from a new generation. The outstanding technological performance of Swiss start-ups was also undisputed. There are plenty of promising investment cases. Historically, the VC funds that start up in crisis years are the ones with the highest returns. With this argument, numerous Swiss VCs are currently looking for investors. The Swiss VC funds are proving resilient in the current challenging times. So far, none of them have had to close their doors. Thanks to SECA - Swiss Private Equity & Corporate Finance Association for organising the event and to the VCs for sharing insights about their funds.
