The DHM, a copper mine located near the city of Calama in Northern Chile, experienced a significant rockfall in November 2021. This resulted in severe damage to an important part of the mine's man-made slopes, causing major disruptions and financial losses. Although onsite surveys successfully predicted the collapse and aided in the rescue of personnel and equipment, the mine's management decided to implement additional monitoring measures. This proactive decision involved the installation of five fixed and permanent vibration monitoring stations strategically positioned in critical areas of the mine. The chosen instruments for this monitoring are the MR3003BLA devices, which can measure velocity in three directions as well as air pressure. The noise and vibration caused by traffic is a major concern in many cities. To address this issue, some places have installed instruments at critical points to monitor vibration levels and notify authorities if they exceed acceptable levels. Monitoring of rail tracks and switches is especially important when trains, trams, or metros pass through residential areas. It’s common practice to measure these trains throughout the day and assess their characteristics, such as speed, weight, and type (e.g. freight or high speed), in order to get an overall understanding of the frequency range and intensity. This information can then be used to implement necessary measures during track work. It’s also helpful to compare vibration levels before and after the work to ensure that any relevant frequencies and amplitudes have been adequately reduced. In order to increase the safety of the Swinoujscie LNG terminal, the supervisors decided to install strong motion systems to control the seismic activity and to immediately alert the site managers in case of earthquakes. Syscom's MARMOT system was selected due to its certifications in Class A (IEC 61226) and SIL 3 (IEC 61508, in triple redundancy), and it has been installed in the plant since the first months of 2016.
