We thank Matthias Egger from The Ocean Cleanup for delivering a profoundly insightful presentation at the Technology and Society Lab, St. Gallen. The research and development activities of The Ocean Cleanup shed light on the pressing issue of ocean plastic pollution, detailing its far-reaching impacts on ecosystems and society. Key messages and learnings of the seminar were: - Only a small fraction (<1%) of all plastics produced globally ends up in the ocean, and it does so mainly through rivers. Intercepting plastic debris in rivers is therefore an effective way to quickly reduce plastic emissions into our oceans. Systematic extraction of riverine plastic emissions not only provides a low-cost and immediate cut in plastic emissions to the oceans. It also provides us with data-based insights into the success or failure of midstream and upstream policies and is a practical metric for global comparison. - Most plastic debris entering the oceans through rivers beaches onto nearby coastlines. A small fraction escapes the coastal trapping and accumulates in oceanic gyres together with plastic debris from marine based sources (e.g., fishing and shipping). Plastic debris collected in rivers and oceanic gyres can be recycled into durable products. The Ocean Cleanup does so in partnership with KIA and Coldplay. - While prevention of further plastic pollution is critical, cleanup of plastics that have already accumulated in the environment is crucial to avoid long-term ecological harm due to the fragmentation of this legacy pollution into potentially harmful micro- and nanoplastics. - Applying and advancing the methodology of Net Environmental Benefit Analysis (NEBU) shall guide to where, when, and how cleaning rivers and oceans has an overall (net-)positive environmental impact. It was an enlightening experience, sparking meaningful dialogue and highlighting our common mission to create a more sustainable society through technology and material development as well as changing behaviors. #PlasticPollution #Sustainability #OceanCleanup #CleanTech #EnvironmentalImpact
