Artificial intelligence: the truth behind the hype The discussion about artificial intelligence (AI) has grown enormously over the last 15 years, with the roots of the research going back to the 1950s. While some developments are promising, there is also a flood of exaggerated expectations and fears that often obscure the essentials. It is time to scrutinise the hype and focus on the real applications. Current AI applications show that this technology is gaining a foothold in many professional environments. It is becoming clear that there will not be ‘one big AI’, but a multitude of small, specialised applications. These will operate both visibly and in the background and solve specific problems. A dynamic AI scene has developed in Switzerland in recent years, producing innovative solutions.
