On site at the IStructE award-winning project “66 Oxford Terrace” The BBR Network and Contech teams were on site recently at 66 Oxford Terrace in Christchurch (New Zealand), the proud winner of the IStructE 2024 Structural Award for a Pioneering Retrofit Approach. This remarkable project marks the first use of a novel damping device on a reinforced concrete building, saving a 13-storey earthquake-damaged tower from demolition and rebuild. Key parts of this post-seismic upgrade was the integration of our #BBRVTCONACMI 3106 multi-strand tendons, a 37m-long post-tensioning system, and the innovative damping devices. These measures enable the building to dissipate seismic energy, enhancing the overall performance during a seismic event. BBR GT Champion Award to Kappa for its exceptional work on the Çayirhan Bridge BBR Network Member for Turkey, KAPPA KALIP VE İNŞAAT TAAHHÜT A.Ş. is the winner of the first BBR Network GT Champion Award. A new addition to our awards categories, this award recognizes a Network Member’s work on a project that utilized BBR geotechnical construction methods in successful, inventive ways. Difficult ground conditions and the need to uplift forces during an earthquake required additional strength for the Çayirhan Bridge required 18 standard seven-strand 30m BBR VT CONA CMG strand ground anchors for additional strength on each side of the bank for the bridge’s inclined piers’ foundations. The team’s engineering creativity and expertise developed an innovative solution, ensuring the project’s successful completion and demonstrating the power of teamwork in overcoming obstacles. Celebrating their win in the awards ceremony picture are Kappa’s Murat Kutay and Kadir Hekimoglu, with our CEO Olivier FORGET. A successful seminar by BBR Adria bringing the BBR Network closer to the Balkans bbr adria recently hosted an engaging seminar at the Grand Hotel Zagreb, warmly welcomed by CEO Želimir Bodiroga. Professionals from Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, and the Republic of North Macedonia came together to explore the BBR Network and discover the innovative AQUILA Built Health initiative. The event began with a welcoming dinner on Wednesday evening, providing an excellent opportunity for attendees to connect. Thursday’s program featured insightful presentations, opened by Želimir Bodiroga, who set a collaborative and informative tone for the day. Beat Joss shared “The BBR Network – 80 Years of Engineering Excellence,” showcasing BBR’s longstanding achievements. Gianni Moor then discussed advancements in reducing carbon emissions through innovative floor slab construction techniques. The morning continued with Beat Joss highlighting recent successes in sustainable construction and retrofitting, followed by Gianni Moor's session on NDT assessment of pylon foundations. Xiaomeng Wang then introduced the #BBRVTCONACMG, the first globally ETA-approved strand ground anchor system. Further insights were provided by Predrag Presečki on 20 years of post-tensioning floor slabs in Croatia, along with presentations from Damir Mujdžić and Marko Bošnjak, showcasing landmark infrastructure projects in Slovenia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. A successful conclusion to the BBR Network’s European Project Managers’ Workshop! BBR VT International has wrapped up the second day of this year’s European Project Managers’ Workshop, hosted by the new Network Member for the Netherlands, De Vries Vsp, at the Van der Walk Hotel in Gorinchem. The day kicked off with presentations on the BBR VT CONA CMG strand ground anchor, followed by descriptions of the application of band post-tensioning systems in wind tower prestressing and MRR for windmill repairs and bridge strengthening. BBR Network Members were also introduced to BBR's evolving AI initiative, including a demonstration of our new AI chatbot and an introduction to ChatGPT prompts. We had expert sessions led by Network Members Ævia and De Vries Vsp, who shared exciting insights into their upcoming projects, highlighting the innovative work happening within our Network. And to conclude this two-day event, delegates enjoyed a picturesque boat tour through the Biesbosch nature reserve, kindly organised by De Vries Vsp, showcasing the area’s stunning natural beauty. BBR Network's Outstanding Achievement is awarded to a BBR Network Member that has designed and implemented a post-tensioning engineering solution to the benefit of the local community and wider society.  This year’s Outstanding Achievement Award goes to Stahlton AG for its work on the Schwamendingen suburb of Zurich in Switzerland. The picture shows our CEO Olivier FORGET with Stahlton’s CEO Rainer Zünd A project spanning six years, from 2018 to 2024, the 1.7km long Schwamendingen enclosure project used BBR Build+ systems to roof over a section of the A1 highway with a new greenway. Providing huge benefits to local residents, the greenway will help alleviate noise pollution from one of Switzerland’s busiest stretches of motorway and connect residents in the Schwamendingen suburb.
