Digital payments strengthen health systems, reduce costs and improve the speed and security of wages for community health workers. In Burkina Faso, the Global Fund pushed for digital payments to create more reliable wage transfers for community health workers distributing mosquito nets. As a result, Burkina Faso distributed €23 million through over 630,000 transaction from 2021-2023. She announced that over the next three years, The Global Fund will allocate more than $1.8 billion towards key initiatives aligned with the Africa CDC’s objectives. Uganda's National Tuberculosis Reference Laboratory uses next-generation sequencing technology to map and scan for drug-resistant strains of TB. The same equipment – procured with Global Fund support – has helped scientists and health officials track cases of other deadly disease like COVID-19 and Ebola. With support from The Global Fund, Uganda’s Reference Library is sharing its methods and expertise with more than 20 countries across Sub-Saharan Africa to use sequencing for surveillance – and prepare the entire region for the health threats to come.
