Advancing workers' rights globally

Info

Who We Are: UNI Global Union, based in Nyon, Switzerland, represents more than 20 million workers from over 150 different countries in the fastest growing sectors in the world – skills and services. The majority of new jobs are expected to be in these sectors in the coming decades. UNI and our affiliates in all regions are driven to ensure these jobs are decent and workers’ rights are protected, especially the right to join a union and bargain collectively. Our Mission: To grow and strengthen affiliated unions and build worker power in the services and allied sectors. UNI Global Union is working with its member unions to change the rules of the game in the global labour market. The UNI Breaking Through strategy is our plan to organise the global service sector workforce and ensure respect and dignity in the global workplace. How We Do It: UNI focuses on worker organizing and regulatory action to create a better world for working people. UNI is fighting for jobs with social security and justice for all to improve workplaces and raise employment standards in the services and allied sectors. UNI has signed more than 50 global agreements with multinational companies to agree to workers’ rights standards for all of these companies’ workers worldwide. How We Got Here: UNI was created on January 1, 2000, by members of The Communications International, FIET the International Graphical Federation and the Media and Entertainment International.

Türkiye: Great step forward for workers at German shoe retailer, Deichmann, as they win substantial pay rises, benefits and bonuses in their first-ever collective agreement Mathias Bolton, Head of UNI Commerce, said: “This hard-won collective agreement marks a significant breakthrough for Deichmann workers in Türkiye. Their determination and resilience have paid off, proving that when workers stand together, they can overcome the odds – especially with the strength of global solidarity.” Under the collective agreement, which will be applied retrospectively from 1 July 2024 until 31 December 2026, all workers will get a pay rise of 8 per cent of the minimum wage in Türkiye in 2024, with further wage increases set for 2025 and 2026. Almost all retail workers in Türkiye are paid the minimum wage. Deichmann workers will also be paid a bonus of a monthly wage each year. Compensation for overtime work has been raised from 50 per cent to 60 per cent. Additionally, workers will now receive 1.5 times their daily pay for work on bank holidays, compared to the one additional daily pay currently mandated by law. All workers will enjoy an additional two days of annual leave, as well as extra leave in cases of marriage, death of a relative, natural disasters and moving home. Hakan Bozkurt, General Secretary of Turkish union, Tez-Koop-İş Sendikası said: “The benefits and pay rises secured in this agreement will make a real difference to workers’ lives. We extend our gratitude to UNI and ver.di for their support, which helped us achieve our first collective agreement with Deichmann. We will keep working with UNI to organize more retail workers, grow union power and expand collective bargaining in the commerce sector.” Find out more: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eBf5CPMb

On World #DayOfCare, we are asking what happened to the promises we made to care givers during the pandemic's height? We clapped for them then, but we have the opportunity to show real gratitude now. We must push governments, employers and society at large to put in place the meaningful changes that care workers have been fighting for: formal employment, safe staffing levels, professional training, union representation, and freedom from violence and harassment. Caregivers can’t wait because we know that our communities are only as strong as those who care for them. Read my essay in IPS Journal below. #CareCantWait https://lnkd.in/eAQesKWK

✊ UNI unions from across the gaming sector expressed their solidarity with online casino workers at Evolution in Georgia during a global meeting in Helsinki last week. Around half of the Swedish gaming giant's 15,000 workforce is based in the country. “Evolution workers have already sacrificed so much, so we must fight until the end and push the company to sit at the table. Whatever Evolution says, workers want to negotiate and get an agreement to improve working conditions. They are not demanding millions. They just want decent treatment. They want to stop harassment. They want to work in a healthy and respectful environment. So I’m extremely pleased to see UNI affiliates ready to support workers at Evolution Georgia, said UNI's Head of Gaming, Giedre Lelyte.
