The Department of Economics at the University of Zurich is one of the leading economics departments in Europe and a global leader in the fields of Development Economics and Neuroeconomics. We are committed to a truly multidisciplinary approach, which combines modern economics with elements of history, political science, psychology, sociology, biology, and neuroscience. RESEARCH: Our expertise spans most fields of economic research. We are proud to host two world-renowned research laboratories. The ‘Laboratory for Social and Neural Systems Research’ and the ‘Laboratory for Experimental and Behavioral Economics’. EDUCATION: We offer challenging courses for students on all levels. In addition to Undergraduate Courses (BA/MA) the Department offers two Graduate Programs and a Pre-Doc program for young talents. DIALOGUE: We share our insights and contribute to the academic and public discourse. We regularly host public lectures, academic workshops and networking events for Alumni and the community of Economists in Switzerland. Our researchers advise on current affairs and our research is regularly covered in leading international and national media. More than 300 members contribute to our Department’s success.     DEPARTMENT NEWS | 🎉 Die University of Zurich rangiert an erster Stelle im neuen 𝐕𝐖𝐋-𝐑𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 der WirtschaftsWoche* und schneidet somit erneut als forschungsstärkste Hochschule im Bereich VWL im deutschsprachigen Raum ab – und zwar mit grossem Abstand.   Seit zehn Jahren gilt die UZH in der DACH-Region als Nummer 1 in der VWL. Wie jedoch ist es dem Zürcher 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐬 gelungen, sich als Speerspitze der Wirtschaftsforschung zu etablieren?   Florian Scheuer, Leiter des 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐬, geht in einem von Bert Losse verfassten Beitrag auf einen Teil des Erfolgsrezepts ein. Das Department holt stets die Besten an Bord: "𝐖𝐢𝐫 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐢𝐛𝐞𝐧 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐡𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐢𝐭 𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐥 𝐆𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐝", so Florian Scheuer über die Rekrutierungsstrategie des Departements. Und die Besten ziehen wiederum die Besten an: In weniger als einem Jahrzehnt hat sich die Zahl der Professuren nahezu verdoppelt - Die Zahl der Professuren wird sich im Jahr 2024 auf 37 erhöhen. Beyond the professor's affiliation with the Jacobs Center, he/she will be a member of the Department of Economics. The research focus of the Jacobs Center is to understand how economic, social, psychological, or biological factors interact in creating opportunities and overcoming obstacles in child and youth development.     RESEARCH | A new study by Ana Costa-Ramón, Ursina Schaede, Michaela Slotwinski, and Anne Ardila Brenøe highlights the importance of raising awareness about the long-term financial implications of part-time work to help mothers make better-informed decisions for their future. As consumers, we often face a trade-off between cost and conscience.
