Color-optimized solar modules to combine crop growth and energy production

Info

Agricultural greenhouses are key toward a sustainable food supply, however they have significant energetic needs due to heating and artificial lightening. There is a push from governments, retailers and consumers to reduce carbon footprint of greenhouses. Voltiris enables double-use of large greenhouses surfaces to produce electricity without impacting their high agricultural yield. Voltiris introduces a solar panel design to generate electricity from the part of sunlight's spectrum that is unused for crop growth.

🏆 Winner of the Greenhouse of the Future Competition! We are excited to announce that Voltiris, in collaboration with Skytree, Thermeleon, and FOTONIQ, has won the "Greenhouse of the Future" pitch. Together, we presented a bold vision for a sustainable, modular greenhouse designed to foster open innovation.   🎤 Our Pitch We must future-proof our greenhouses. This requires not just incremental improvements, but a transformative leap forward—what we call "system innovation." By combining the cutting-edge technologies of Voltiris, Skytree, Thermeleon, and FOTONIQ, we aim to make that leap.   In future greenhouses, Voltiris’ solar modules will provide an abundance of renewable energy and reduce peak plant temperatures. Voltiris powers Skytree’s Direct Air Capture technology to pull CO₂ directly from the air. FOTONIQ’s PAR+ coating will diffuse sunlight for optimal growing conditions, while Thermeleon’s passive thermal battery regulates temperature through sustainable heating and cooling. This integrated solution allows for more sustainable cultivation and maximum CO₂ capture.   📣 🌱 Are you, or do you know, a grower, integrator, or innovative technology expert eager to contribute to the Greenhouse of the Future? Join us!   Special thanks to HortiHeroes and our partners for the Greenhouse of the Future: World Horti Center, Vertify, Glastuinbouw Nederland, Tomatoworld, Harry Wubben Flowers & Funny Santini , and Greenport West-Holland.   📸 Photo credit: Rolf van Koppen

I’m proud to share that Rabobank, a highly recognized player in the industry, has included Voltiris’ technology in it’s roadmap for sustainable horticulture 🍀   The roadmap was developed to help growers identify the next step on their path to a climate-neutral greenhouse operation, covering a variety of sustainable opportunities from heating to power and CO2 capture.   Voltiris' solar modules have been recognized as one of the top four most sustainable power solutions for growers, playing a key role in their transition to carbon-free, independent energy.   A big thank you to Rabobank for featuring Voltiris in this important initiative. We are eager to help as many growers as possible in their transition towards more sustainable and resilient vegetable production. Curious to learn more? Check out the link to the roadmap in the comments below! 👇

A Huge Milestone : Ranked 6th Startup in Switzerland   Voltiris has been ranked 6th in Top 100 Swiss Startup Award for 2024, recognized by a panel of 100 investors and experts from the Swiss startup ecosystem. This is our first appearance on the list, and being only two years old, it’s an honor to be ranked alongside emerging leaders like DePoly, this year's winner, as well as - among others - HAYA Therapeutics, Planted, Corintis. Huge congratulations to all. A big thank you also to the jury members for believing in us and voting for Voltiris, and the Venturelab team for organizing this great event. This recognition belongs to our entire team. Over the past few weeks, we've achieved incredible milestones—from launching new projects in Europe, preparing for more, securing exciting global partnerships, to setting new records in energy production from our solar units. Thank you, team! There’s still a long road ahead, with many more exciting milestones to reach… Stay tuned! #TOP100SSU

Generate energy and grow crops | sustainable greenhouses | CTO@Voltiris

Highest energy yield ⚡ ever reached for a crop-compatible agrivoltaic system? A few weeks ago, the Voltiris team achieved to reach a peak power of 145 Wp/m2 for its innovative greenhouse solar modules. Why is this a breakthrough in the agrivoltaics field ? 1/ The Voltiris modules have been tested and validated in greenhouse settings over the most light-demanding crops (tomatoes, pepper, cucumbers...). For these crops, the rule of thumb is "1% light loss is 1% yield loss". In comparison, reaching 145Wp/m2 would require a ~70% light loss when using standard checkerboard APV technologies, which decreases too much the agronomical yield to be economical. This was made possible thanks to our fruitful collaboration with 3M who has been supplying us perfect dichroic filters, that could separate effectively the wavelengths reaching the crops from the ones used for generating power. 2/ No similar spectrally-filtering low-concentration agrivoltaics system have reached such a high efficiency in the past. This efficiency could only be reached thanks to the team dedication to get the perfect optical and mechanical design of the dichroic-based concentrator. In Low-Concentration PV systems, every details count, and small errors in the optical system can be detrimental to the system efficiency. I can't wait to see how far the dedicated Voltiris team will push further the boundaries of the agrivoltaics field, and how Voltiris will keep contributing to the electrification and decarbonization of the greenhouse industry.
