Amid ongoing wars and escalating global conflict, women’s voices are not just important—they are essential in building lasting peace. It is not transformative to have women at the table, it is common sense. At the Human Rights Council, I moderated a brilliant side event led by ACT Alliance and partners on women's critical role in peace and security, especially in the face of shrinking civic space and rising authoritarian regimes. Our esteemed panel—Adriana Quinones (UN Women), Yordanos Asnake (ACT Ethiopia), and Katja Vauhkonen (FELM)—highlighted the urgent need to fully implement Resolution 1325 and ensure women are leading peace processes around the world. Women, who bear the heaviest burdens in conflict, are still significantly underrepresented at peace tables. As we hear from powerful voices that marginalise women living in crisis, their experiences and leadership are vital to addressing local realities, dismantling oppressive structures, and fostering genuine, sustainable peace. Yet, anti-gender backlash and patriarchal norms continue to silence women and marginalise their contributions. Now, more than ever, we must stand in solidarity with women at the frontlines of peacebuilding. Their voices must be heard, amplified, and acted upon. This is a call to governments, civil society, and individuals everywhere to support women in conflict zones and advocate for their leadership in peace negotiations. Here are two things we MUST Do: 1: Amplify fully implementing in conflict zones by sharing their stories and advocating for their inclusion in peace processes. Post, write, speak out—because collective action starts with individual voices. 2: Push for the full implementation of Resolution 1325 in your communities and on global platforms. Demand that women have a seat at every peace negotiation table. #WomenPeaceSecurity #Resolution1325 Thanks to the Member States and partners in making this happen. It demonstrates concrete examples of how to increase diversity in peace-building processes, including full, equal and meaningful participation of women and girls. Furthermore, the event explores means to reinforce local leadership, including faith-based. 📅 Tuesday 10th September 2024 ⏲ 14:30 - 15:30 CEST 📍 Room XXII, Palais des Nations, Geneva (enter via door E40, UN badge required) Co-sponsors: Finland, Colombia, the European Union, UN Women and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) In collaboration with ACT Alliance, Suomen Lähetysseura (Felm), Norwegian Church Aid / Kirkens Nødhjelp, Act Svenska kyrkan, World Council of Churches, Lutheran World Federation, World YWCA, HEKS/EPER (Swiss Church Aid) , Finn Church Aid and Abilis Foundation. #TheRoad2Equality #HRC57 #GenderPeaceSecurity #HumanRights #SDG5 #FaithInGenderJustice #Peace #1325

The World YWCA movement stands in unwavering solidarity with the people of the Middle East, especially women and children, who are disproportionately impacted by the escalation of violence. We call on global citizens and those in power to exert immediate pressure to stop the war and prevent further death, injury, and displacement. Let us come together and advocate for an end to violence, for peace and justice cannot exist with continued occupation. 🔗 Read the full statement on World YWCA action alert regarding the escalation in the Middle East: https://cutt.ly/JeOvzCth

📢 #YWCALeaders collaborate! The recently elected World YWCA Board successfully held its first in-person meeting in Athens in September! With a focus on strengthening leadership, advancing the 2024-2027 Strategic Framework, and building teamwork and aligning practices, the Board made significant progress towards planning for meaningful change in the quadrennium towards our #YWCAGoal2035. The meeting also highlighted the incredible work of YWCA of Greece, which hosted the Board on their fabulous campus in Athens. The exchanges between the #YWCALeaders strengthened the sisterhood and solidarity that drives our vehicle of change. However, visa restrictions imposed on some board members prevented full attendance, reminding us of the importance of advocating for visa justice for young women to ensure all voices are included. Exciting steps ahead for the #YWCA movement! 👀 Meet the Board, which is composed of representatives from all regions, including 55% young women: https://lnkd.in/erEJT2Jq 📷 Check the picture of the Board Meeting: https://lnkd.in/ePc54-K9 Caterina Lemp Bitsacopoulos Casey Harden Adrianna Sosa Mira Rizek Yvonne Schüpbach Charlotte Muggeridge Tina Herrera Kateule Valentina Kasonde Renee Mastrolembo Dieke Hengelaar Naw Gloria Maung Maung Emma Grzechnik Mörk Aldeli Albán Reyna Margaret KUO Amara Killen

More than 500,000 individuals are displaced, with families forced to flee their homes and essential services becoming increasingly scarce. Join us in urging the international community to cease hostilities and provide urgent humanitarian aid.
