There are many #healthcare challenges today and particle accelerators are an incredible tool to help tackle many of them, and bright young minds are needed to help drive forward innovation. This is why 24 students from around the world got together for the EU-funded I-FAST project’s Accelerators for Healthcare challenge. After nine days of learning and preparing at ESI Archamps, the four teams presented their #innovative solutions today at CERN. 👏 Congratulations to the winning team whose idea involved: Tackling prosthetic joint complications through targeted X-ray radiation, a solution that can be more effective and less invasive than current treatments such as physiotherapy, corticosteroid use and surgery. 👍Equal congratulations to the three other teams whose excellent projects involved: ⭕ Using a sophisticated low-dose X-ray therapy device to treat severe burns, reducing inflammation and scarring, and weakening bacteria. ⭕Using low-dose radiotherapy to reduce antibiotic resistance in bacteria to optimise the treatment of diseases such as Tuberculosis. ⭕Designing a pocket-sized, 1cm-long microchip accelerator that uses compact semiconductor technology to precisely radiate cancerous tumours. A big thanks to our fantastic judges for their input, questions and suggestions, Sandra Muhr, Manjit Dosanjh, Kristaps Paļskis, Mike Lamont. Thanks also to all the partners who supported this challenge that gave these students an incredible opportunity to see first-hand how research and science can make a tangible difference in the world. 👏 Congratulations ADVACAM Cameras, a Czech company putting CERN’s versatile #Timepix technology to good use! A new study, published in Nature Magazine’s Scientific Reports, demonstrates the suitability of the company’s novel camera-based system for monitoring the irradiation of cancerous head tumours. Advacam’s system, which uses 28 Timepix 3 detectors, could help limit the side effects of ion radiotherapy, advancing specialised cancer treatment. ➡️ Keep a look out for more results from Advacam’s joint collaboration with the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) Heidelberg, DKFZ German Cancer Research Center, and the Heidelberg Ion-Beam Therapy Center (HIT) at University Hospital Heidelberg (UKHD). #Innovation #ClinicalStudy #CancerResearch #CancerTreatment #MedTech
This week brought great news published in the Scientific Reports journal! 📰 Our camera-based system for monitoring 𝗶𝗿𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝘂𝗺𝗼𝗿𝘀 was able to detect and quantify a dose shift of 1.5 mm. That is half of what the set safety margin allows for a head setup.👤 This proves the system's sensitivity sufficient to detect clinically relevant dose shifts in ion beam radiotherapy - one of the many conclusions of a study recently published in 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱'𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗷𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘀, Nature Magazine'𝘀 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀 ➡️https://lnkd.in/eJD_icmA 👨🔬👩⚕️We have announced earlier this year a joint project with scientists from the German National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT), DKFZ German Cancer Research Center, and the Heidelberg Ion-Beam Therapy Center (HIT) at University Hospital Heidelberg (UKHD) and this is the first result.
