The FSG secretariat meets the Ibá – Indústria Brasileira de Árvores team in São Paulo! Our FSG Manager, Jessica Fonseca da Silva, could not leave Brazil without meeting with the wonderful team of experts at the Brazilian Tree Industry (Ibá). 🤝 Last year, the FSG worked closely with Ibá, on important topics for the forest sector. We are grateful for their robust input in our Forest and Nature Metrics tool prototype. 👉 you can find more information about the tool here: https://lnkd.in/gAXiGUHh (more to come on that soon 👀) We also collaborated with Ibá in key global events, such as the side-event on “Sustainable Forest Management and Biodiversity” at the CBD COP16 in Colombia. 🌳🐒 This January, the following team of experts: Márcia S., Patrícia Machado, Camilla Bragotto Marangon, and Adriano Scarpa welcomed Jessica to Ibá’s office in São Paulo and shared more about their context and key priorities. It was a great discussion about key sustainability topics, including the work on compliance with the main forestry certification systems, carbon neutrality and initiatives to protect and promote biodiversity! In 2025, we look forward to continuing this strong collaboration and, together with our shared members and other partners, we will build synergies towards driving progress on sustainability and catalyze action across the forest sector. 💪♻ ⏩ Thank you again the Ibá team for their hospitability and looking forward to future opportunities to meet face-to-face. 🙌 A fantastic opportunity for a member of the FSG team! Kindly hosted by Suzano, Jessica Fonseca da Silva spent a day learning about their operations and business context at one of their sites in Brazil 🌲 Thank you team! ☀️ Bernard de Galembert Edie Marriner
Driving progress towards a healthier planet | Focus on forest ecology, land use change and bioeconomy | Background on corporate accountability, policy and research | Manager at WBCSD's Forest Solutions Group
I started 2025 inspired by a wonderful visit to forestry plantations and a pulp and paper mill in Brazil! 🌳 🏭 I am deeply grateful to Suzano for their hospitality, and for sharing valuable insights into their operations and context. Many thanks to the Forest Solutions Group too, for offering me this opportunity. 🙏 I had a full day with a very packed agenda 🤯: We were on the road from 7 a.m. to see a site where harvesting operations were taking place (live)! There, I learned how the management of plantations is done in this region. I am still impressed by the massive amount of work, expertise and technology that goes into planning and implementing the harvesting, as well as conservation and restoration operations🌱🌳 In the afternoon, I had the pleasure of talking to members of local communities that are part of Suzano’s socio-environmental projects. I could learn about and talk to representatives of honey-producing cooperatives and others who benefit from such collaborations. 🤝 Later that day, I visited one of Suzano’s mills and could see the full process of pulp and paper making – from wood chips to packaged reams of paper! I couldn’t end my day without learning a bit about the innovation taking place in the lab. I was introduced to some incredible research and saw highly innovative products, including food packaging, nappies and textiles. 💡 Learning about the potential uses of lignin and cellulose in so many fields filled my heart with hope for a cleaner and more circular future💚🔁 I would like to send a massive thank you to Marina Negrisoli, Patricia Lombardi Perez de Abreu, Glaucia Dias and Vanessa Melina da Silva Nascimento (and their wonderful team) who organized this visit and hosted me so well! A big thank you to Paulo Rodrigues who so kindly provided a full presentation (with slides!) on Suzano’s sustainability work during our 2hr car ride 😅. Many thanks to Alessandra Lohn for sharing about her team’s socio-environmental work and offering me the opportunity to discuss with a few stakeholders. A massive thank you to Aldo for guiding me through the visit to the mill and to the entire team in the research and innovation lab! I can’t possibly put all the names in this post, but I want to send my wholehearted thank you to all those kind people who welcomed me and shared a bit of their experience 🙏 Here’s my wish for a great year to everyone and that many more opportunities to learn, share and discuss sustainability are to come! 🌍 Today is World Soil Day!🌱 As global leaders and experts gather for the #UNCCDCOP16, it's a timely moment to reflect on the incredible role forests play in protecting our planet's soil and ecosystems 🌲 Forests are not just about towering trees and wildlife—they are nature's engineers when it comes to maintaining healthy, fertile soil🌾 Here's how: ➡️ Improved soil quality: Forests enrich soil through leaf litter and organic matter, creating a nutrient-rich environment that supports agriculture and biodiversity. ➡️ Erosion prevention: Root networks act as natural anchors, holding soil in place and reducing the devastating impacts of wind and water erosion. ➡️ Combating desertification: By stabilizing ecosystems and increasing moisture retention in the ground, forests play a critical role in halting the spread of deserts. ⏳ Healthy soils, like those nurtured by forest ecosystems, are essential for food security, climate resilience, and sustainable development. Yet, soil degradation affects one-third of global land, making action urgent. Members of WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development’s Forest Solutions Group are engaged in making sure that forests fully deliver these benefits, through afforestation, reforestation and sustainable forest management, in line with the SDG Goal 15 "Life on Land" as underlined in the FSG SDG Roadmap 🏝️ ➡️ You can read our SDG Roadmap here: https://lnkd.in/e2PpTdMu In 2025, the FSG will continue to develop of our new Forest and Nature Metrics tool, which aims to provide clarity on the most relevant and practical metrics to take action and disclose on nature for the forest sector 🔍 🔊 As we celebrate World Soil Day and engage in #COP16 discussions, let’s amplify the call for stronger global action to protect and restore forests, ensuring a resilient future for communities worldwide. #ForestsMatter #UNCCD #WorldSoilDay #COP16 #Sustainability #SoilHealth #Desertification Marina Negrisoli Bernard de Galembert Jessica Fonseca da Silva Edie Marriner Suzano

👏 It was inspiring to see WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development's Forest Solutions Group members turn out in full force at the UN Biodiversity #CBDCOP16 in Colombia last week 🌳 🦋 Held in the heart of the world's second most biodiverse nation, this COP aimed to be a "People's COP" and an "Implementation COP," prioritizing inclusivity and action 🤝 🌍 Our members were deeply engaged, driving discussions and actions toward a just and equitable transition to a #naturepositive, #netzero future ➡️ ◽ We hosted two impactful events focused on understanding the sector's unique contribution to tackling inequality and leveraging the forest sector to drive this change. COP16 provided us with the opportunity to bring diverse voices from the forest sector value chain together to discuss current challenges in the sector as well as actions that companies are taking to drive an inclusive transition. Thank you Yuuko Iizuka Jun Morita Sumitomo Forestry Suzano Marina Negrisoli BTG Pactual Timberland Investment Group Caitlin Clarke CMPC Patricio Herranz Hewitt for your participation. We look forward to continuing this conversation well into 2025. ◽ Continuing on the theme of the just transition, we heard from FSG member Veronica de la Cerda CMPC on land-based solutions towards achieving the Rio Convention Goal, with a focus on the role of the forest sector. ◽ In collaboration with WBCSD’s Nature team, we co-hosted events at the Nature Positive Pavilion, where we heard from FSG member Brandon Lewis on the journey of Manulife Investment Management in developing shared metrics aligned with critical global frameworks. We also heard how metrics can be used in action to support the transition toward nature-positive outcomes and help inform better decision making. On the 'hot topic' of metrics, we also heard from Garrett Quinn Smurfit Westrock at #Bloom24 discussing how to accelerate business action accountability through nature metrics and targets. ◽ The collaborative efforts of FSG members have driven the development of a new Forest and Nature Metrics tool, which was launched at #Cali. This tool aims to provide clarity on the most relevant and practical metrics to take action and disclose on nature for the forest sector. Together with already long-existing forest certification schemes, this tool further demonstrates the leading roles that forest sector intends to play in halting and reversing the loss of biodiversity, as eloquently stressed by Caitlin Clarke BTG Pactual Timberland Investment Group and Yuuko Iizuka Sumitomo Forestry in the event co-organized by Ibá – Indústria Brasileira de Árvores , PEFC International and the FSG. ➡️ To learn more about the tool, click here: https://lnkd.in/gAXiGUHh Thank you to our FSG members for leading the charge across climate, nature and equity at COP16! 🙌 Bernard de Galembert Jessica Fonseca da Silva Edie Marriner
