🎉The Games continue The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, which will take place between 28 August and 8 September, bringing together as many as 4,400 athletes from around the world. Although closely linked to the Olympic Games, the Paralympic Games have their own specificities. Let us give you a summary: 🎯 Origins The Paralympic Games did not originate in ancient Greece, but in Great Britain: on 29 July 1948, the opening day of the 1948 London Olympic Games, 16 men and women injured in the Second World War competed in an archery competition at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. These competitions, organised by various sports associations for the disabled, became known as the ‘Paralympic Games’ from 1960 onwards. 👉 Organisation The Paralympic Games are not managed/owned by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) but by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), which was created in 1989 to coordinate the various sports organisations for the disabled that constitute the Paralympic movement. The IOC and IPC subsequently signed an agreement in 2001 for the Olympic and Paralympic Games to be held in the same city. 👉Symbol and flag The Paralympic logo is made up of three elements, called ‘Agitos’, red, blue and green, the three most common colours in flags around the world. It stands for courage, determination, inspiration, and equality. 👉 Torch relay The flame of the Paralympic Games is not lit in Olympia (Greece), but in Stoke Mandeville (Great Britain), the birthplace of the Paralympic Games. It is then transported to the host city, where it lights the cauldron during the Opening Ceremony. 🏐 Sports The Paralympic Games programme consists of fewer sports than the Olympic Games but still includes two unique sports: boccia and goalball. Other para-sports may benefit from adjustments in terms of rules and equipment. 🥇 Events The Paralympic Games programme includes far more events than the Olympic Games (549 compared to 329 for Paris 2024). This is due in particular to the different classifications according to the degree of disability. If you are still wondering why the Games and Paralympic Games can't be combined into one single event, then you can find some more answers in the article below. https://lnkd.in/ddR9RTnm #IPC #Paris2024 #OlympicStudies

What an pleasure for us to host Laura Zeng (USA) – rhythmic gymnast and now student researcher at the Olympic Studies Centre some days ago. As YOG Nanjing 2014 Bronze Medalist, and Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Olympian, Laura is now researching about the typology and development of Olympic Villages for the preparation of her senior thesis in the Urban Studies and Humanities Department at Yale University. As a surprise, Maria Bogner, Head of the Olympic Studies Centre took Laura to Olympic House to sign the Olympian wall and hand her the OLY post nominal title in recognition of her accomplishments as an Olympian. Once an Olympian, Always an Olympian. Congratulations Laura and best of luck with your studies. #Olympian #OlympicStudies #Athletes365
