📒 Viral-borne diseases remain a significant global threat, necessitating the collaboration of scientists and policymakers alike. Fortunately, ongoing scientific innovation provides powerful tools and technologies to address these challenges. How do scientists test antiviral drugs and vaccines and what exactly are they investigating? Viral Research often focuses on the virus’ structure, lifecycle, and infection mechanisms. Developing effective solutions requires a variety of biochemical, in vitro, and in vivo assays. Working with live viruses is inherently dangerous, requiring specific specialized training to operate under stringent conditions in a Biosafety Level laboratory. 🔬Recent advancements have introduced a safer alternative: Virus-Like Particles (VLPs). VLPs mimic the structural elements of viruses but lack viral genetic material, making them non-infectious. Promega has leveraged this technology by pseudotyping the VLPs with the Nanoluc-derived peptide HiBiT (1). This modification enables real-time bioluminescent monitoring of viral entry. When these PsVLPs interact with LgBiT-expressing target cells, the HiBiT-LgBiT complementation generates a measurable bioluminescence signal, indicating successful viral entry (2).
