Did you know that 42 out of 48 sub-Saharan African countries share transboundary water basins, including rivers, lakes, and aquifers? Transboundary cooperation is essential for water security, conflict prevention, and regional economic growth. At the 10th Session of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe's (UNECE) Water Convention, the African Development Bank Group and the African Water Facility are actively participating in sessions on financing and transboundary water development and a matchmaking event which connects new members of the convention, mainly African countries, with financing institutions. At the session on "Advancing Transboundary Water Cooperation through Innovative Financing," Mtchera Johannes Chirwa highlighted the Bank Group’s and Facility’s financing solutions for African basin organizations and multinational projects. He emphasized the need for strong frameworks within these organizations and political backing from the involved countries. In another session, "Building Climate Resilience through Ecosystem and Biodiversity Preservation in Transboundary Settings," he discussed how the Bank supports climate resilience and transboundary water cooperation in Africa, emphasising that transboundary water management is a key driver of regional economic integration, as outlined in the Bank’s water policy. #africanwaterfacility

The #9thAfricaWaterWeek and cairo water week kicked off this morning with a joint opening ceremony. Mtchera Johannes Chirwa Chirwa, African Development Bank Group's Acting Director for Water Development and Sanitation gave remarks on reflections and lessons for the sector as it approaches the end of Africa Water Vision 2025. He also spoke on the contribution of the water sector in continent-wide development agenda and enhancing the resilience of communities to climate change, which affects water availability, frequency, and access. "It is more than timely to review the progress made and define, together, our approach to accelerating the implementation of the water development and sanitation agenda in Africa," he said. Africa is facing the threat and negative impact of climate change, which also affects the achievement of the sustainable development goals. The continent will need $277 billion per year to address climate change. The African Development Bank has set a target to raise $25 billion for climate adaptation for Africa by 2025. In 2023, the Bank devoted 55% of its total financing outflows to climate finance. The Bank Group has also invested over $7.3 billion in water and sanitation in the past 10 years, in more than 40 countries, transforming the lives of over 90 million people. The Bank's portfolio in water stands at over $5.4 billion, deployed through 108 operations. 📺 Watch a recap of the opening ceremony: https://lnkd.in/e6qD8qUK #AfDBatWWW
