“Making money may be happiness, but making other people happy is super happiness”, Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus told the DLD Munich audience in 2020. At the time, he was referring to his pioneering concept of microcredits – small loans that have lifted millions of people out of poverty in the Global South. Now, Muhammad Yunus has the chance to bring happiness to an entire country. As the leader of an interim government in his native Bangladesh, the 84-year-old economist will be tasked with bringing peace and stability to the Asian nation, after the autocratic Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country earlier this week. “We’re all rejoicing”, Yunus told The Washington Post. “Today we are free.” Yunus also made clear that he wants to give young people hope for the future, as many of them struggle to find jobs. “Global political and business leaders’ admiration for Yunus and his work could help in his efforts to shore up the economy”, The Wall Street Journal writes. In his DLD20 keynote, Muhammad Yunus showed how passionate he is about fighting #inequality and bringing change to a global economic system that he feels is deeply unfair. “26 people in the whole world own more wealth than the bottom 50% of the population of the entire world”, he pointed out. “I tell myself it’s a ticking time bomb. Socially, politically, economically – totally unsustainable.” But business leaders have a choice, he argued. Instead of optimizing for profit, companies should optimize for social good, just like he did with Grameen Bank (meaning “Village Bank” in Bengali), which he founded in 1983 to provide small loans to poor people who did not qualify for regular bank loans. Out of this idea, and Muhammad Yunus’ tireless work, grew an entire movement. For his effort to “create economic and social development from below”, The Nobel Prize committee awarded Yunus the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize.
