In May, the Southbridge Access teams in Argentina and Chile welcomed students from the University of Georgia's Terry College of Business, led by Program Specialist & Lead CQ Facilitator Kari Sicard and Associate Professor Daniel L. Gamache. The group kicked off in Buenos Aires, where they explored how the U.S. goverment collaborates with Argentine officials to enhance bilateral trade and create a favorable business environment for U.S. companies. The students also delved into the dynamic startup scene with a visit to Draper Startup House and visited agro industry giant Cargill. In Chile, they gained valuable insights into the local economy by visiting key players such as Volta and ProChile among many others. Cultural highlights included visits to historic districts in Buenos Aires and Santiago as well as day trips to Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay, Viña del Mar and Valparaiso, and the majestic Andean valley Cajón del Maipo. This past May, our SBA teams in Vietnam and Thailand had the pleasure of receiving students from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville's Haslam School of Business. Led by Professor Wendy Tate and Lecturer Izabela VanDeest, the students explored leading companies in Ho Chi Minh City and Bangkok. They visited prominent firms across diverse industries, including agribusiness, maritime trade and transportation, dairy product manufacturing, and real estate development. Among the companies they visited were Betrimex, Long An International Port, FrieslandCampina, and Bangkok Port, where they gained valuable insights into management strategies, innovation processes, and the role of technology in operations. These programs offer more than just a global business perspective; they provide a deep cultural immersion. In Ho Chi Minh City, the group explored the Saigon River via the Water Bus, a public transportation system, and visited the Bitexco Financial Tower Skydeck. The Skydeck's interactive exhibits and displays provided an engaging overview of the city's architectural landmarks, economic growth, and vibrant cultural heritage, enriching the students' understanding of the local culture and history. In Bangkok, their adventure began with a visit to the iconic Wat Pho, home to the majestic Reclining Buddha, a symbol of Thai culture within this historic temple complex. The journey continued through the bustling streets of Chinatown, where students explored vibrant markets and savored authentic local cuisine. In June, the SBA Costa Rica Team received a group of students from the University of Texas at San Antonio's Alvarez College of Business, led by Assistant Director Genesis Valdez Noriega. During their visit to San José and Arenal, the students gained valuable insights into the vibrant economy and environment where the coffee industry and sustainability intersect. They explored innovative practices addressing challenges such as climate change, global competition, and the social impact of economic decisions. Costa Rica offers a unique and inspiring educational experience with its rich culture and diverse industries, preparing students for a future in a constantly evolving world. The students immersed themselves in various sectors and companies, including Ara Cacao, Enel Energy, Pozuelo, and Metalub. In San José, they delved into the city's culture and history by visiting the National Museum and its marvelous collections. In the Arenal and La Fortuna regions, the students enjoyed the unique experiences that Costa Rica offers. They relaxed at the Ecotermales wellness paradise nestled in the primary rainforest, experienced a rush of adrenaline on a canopy tour, and visited Don Juan's Farm, which champions organic products and sustainable development to become a fully green farm. In May, the SBA Chile Team hosted a group of students from the University of Arkansas Sam M. Walton School of Business, led by Instructor Sarah Jensen Ed.D. During their visit to Santiago, Valparaíso, and Puerto Varas, the students engaged with several companies across various industries in Chile. They gained valuable insights into conducting business in a country renowned for its stable business environment, strong emphasis on free trade, and robust economy driven by key industries such as mining, agriculture, and technology. Chile's commitment to transparency and innovation creates a favorable climate for business growth and development. The companies they visited included Unifrutti, Aexsa, Aqua Chile, and the Walmart Chile Distribution Center in Santiago, San Antonio, and Puerto Varas. On the cultural immersion front, the students explored Santiago, visiting the city's highlights and the vibrant artisan market at "El Pueblito de los Dominicos." In Valparaíso, they toured wineries, explored Valparaíso and Viña del Mar, and enjoyed a Chilean cooking class featuring the beloved empanada. In Puerto Varas, they visited the picturesque Osorno Volcano, the Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park, and Petrohué Falls. The students group were captivated by the diverse natural wonders, including turquoise waterfalls framed by lush greenery. Additionally, they had the unique opportunity to learn about the Huilliche people of southern Chile, who preserve rich cultural traditions, and they enjoyed a traditional Curanto feast, a symbol of community and celebration, cooked underground, featuring a variety of seafood, meats, and potatoes. In May, the SBA Portugal Team had the pleasure of hosting the University of Tennessee, Knoxville's Haslam College of Business, led by Russell Crook and Associate Professor Russell Zaretzki, during their visits to Lisbon and Porto, Portugal. This program provided students with invaluable opportunities to connect with business leaders across multiple industries, offering deep insights into the Portuguese business landscape. Throughout the program, the students engaged with 8 leading companies and organizations such as Startup Lisboa, Port of Lisbon, and The Navigator Company. Beyond the professional visits, the students explored Lisbon and Porto, immersing themselves in the unique cultural aspects of both cities. In Lisbon, they marveled at the city's rich history, wandering through its cobblestone streets, historic squares, and iconic landmarks such as the Belém Tower and the Jerónimos Monastery. Their journey included a visit to the São Simão e Faianças Vila Fresca tile factory, dating back to the 14th century, a day trip to the enchanting town of Sintra, and a captivating boat tour along Porto's iconic Douro River. This past May, the SBA Sweden team welcomed students from the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota, led by Industrial Relations Faculty Excellence Chair Connie Wanberg. They embarked on a journey to learn from the best companies in Sweden about the importance of human capital management, its challenges, and its development in such an advanced and innovative country. The companies visited included SFK Group, Simple/&Frankly, and Ikea, among many others. Human Capital Management (HCM) is crucial in Sweden because it focuses on innovation, productivity, and employee well-being. Sweden is renowned for its progressive policies on labor rights, gender equality, and continuous professional development. During their program, the students also had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the vibrant culture of Gothenburg and Stockholm. In Gothenburg, they explored the city's picturesque canals and maritime heritage, and in Stockholm, they marveled at the historic Old Town, Gamla Stan, and its medieval architecture. They also visited the Royal Palace, Djurgården (Museum Island), and the Vasa Museum, one of Scandinavia's most visited museums, which houses the uniquely preserved warship Vasa from 1628, adorned with hundreds of wooden sculptures.
