At Ultranav, we maintain a strong dedication to sustainability and energy efficiency across our group of shipping companies. Recently, there has been a focus on optimising tank cleaning processes – a critical yet fuel-intensive operation that also poses significant safety risks due to the need for human entry into the tanks. To address this challenge, Ultratank has partnered with SpectroVise to explore innovative methods for improving the efficiency of tank cleaning. This collaboration aims to reduce the use of chemicals and water, cut down on energy consumption, and eliminate the need for human entry into tanks. By utilizing spectrometer technology to analyse wash water and collecting data over several months, the team is working to refine the cleaning stages, ensuring tanks achieve the required cleanliness standards without unnecessary resource use. This ongoing trial is set to deliver results by the end of the year, with the potential to significantly advance sustainable tank cleaning practices🌿

We are delighted to share that Ultranav has invested in Signol, a tech-enabled behaviour change service which helps shipping companies fully engage crews to reduce emissions through their daily tasks. We are glad to support Signol’s efforts to ensure the shipping industry doesn’t overlook the power of its human workforce as it tackles the urgent need to decarbonise. Through harnessing existing opportunities for fuel savings, Signol has reduced ships’ emissions by up to 12% without any technological or physical changes to ships themselves. Confused about how FuelEU and the EU ETS regulations differ? Ultrabulk A/S just shared a post aiming to outline the regulations' roles in shaping a more sustainable maritime industry 🌍
Navigating the future of maritime emissions: FuelEU vs. EU ETS 🌍 We recently explained the FuelEU regulations and what they mandate. But there is also another major EU initiative: the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS). This can lead to some confusion - what sets the two apart, and how will they shape the industry? We aim to shine a light on the matter 💡 FuelEU is all about driving the maritime sector towards cleaner, sustainable fuels. It is a push to reduce the carbon intensity of maritime fuels by setting stricter limits over time and encouraging the use of alternative energy sources like advanced biofuels and hydrogen. Unlike the EU ETS, FuelEU covers all greenhouse gases (GHGs) - including CO2, methane, and nitrous oxide - on a Well-to-Wake basis, targeting the entire lifecycle of fuels and pushing for a transition to alternative fuels. You can learn more from our last post on the subject here: https://lnkd.in/dAxhfUEX EU ETS takes a different approach. This cap-and-trade system focuses specifically on CO2 emissions on a Tank-to-Wake basis. It sets a cap on these emissions and requires shipping companies to manage their CO2 output through tradable allowances. While FuelEU aims for a broad impact on all GHGs, the EU ETS zeroes in on CO2 emissions, driving reductions through a regulatory framework that aligns with the EU’s broader climate goals. But is it important to note, that from 2026, GHG will also be included in EU ETS. Both initiatives are crucial, but each plays a distinct role in steering the maritime industry towards a more sustainable future 🌱🚢 🔎 Confused about the concepts of Well-to-Wake and Tank-to-Wake? We have a clarifier for those as well: https://lnkd.in/dkQp2bYx
