A new hydrogen combustion engine has emerged out of Korea. Kia, Hyundai, and Volvo are involved in the development of a hydrogen combustion engine set to be unveiled to the consumer market by 2025. Hydrogen combustion vehicles will offer similar performance and reliability as diesel trucks but with extremely low emissions, possibly within the "zero emissions" standards set by the European Union. We at ACS believe that a truly green future will require the development of diverse new technologies and, while our recent work has been more closely applicable to hydrogen fuel cell vehicles than to their combustion counterparts, we are excited to see each one of these green tech developments take shape. https://lnkd.in/erHTuP9v

Green Steel Production is Gaining Global Momentum Blast furnaces are responsible for approximately 70% of steel production across the globe, but this production method is also responsible for almost two tons of annual C02 emissions. The steel industry is extremely carbon-intensive, and this is mainly due to the blast furnace process, which involves smelting iron ore with coal-derived coke at high temperatures, releasing CO2 emissions. There is a short-term opportunity to overhaul this industry in favor of greener practices, as about 70% of all steel furnaces worldwide will require relining by 2030. Plants already undergoing maintenance could shift toward a newer model of Direct Reduction of Iron ore systems (DRI) powered by hydrogen, feeding into Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF). If the electricity powering the furnaces is renewably generated, this sector could effectively eliminate all harmful emissions.
