Thomas Edison, the "Wizard of Menlo Park," championed DC power, believing it was safer and more reliable. However, Nikola Tesla, a visionary engineer, saw the potential of AC power for long-distance transmission. Their rivalry ignited the "War of Currents." Edison's DC system, while efficient for short distances, struggled to overcome power loss over longer lines. Tesla's AC, on the other hand, could be transformed to higher voltages for efficient transmission, then stepped down for safer use. Ultimately, Tesla and his partner George Westinghouse won the battle, and AC became the standard. Edison's legacy, however, lives on in batteries and other DC applications.
