What's the economic and environmental impact of ship recycling in Bangladesh? What will happen when the demand for sustainable ship recycling increases once the Hong Kong Convention comes into force in 2025? Bangladesh is one of the world's top ship recycling countries, playing a crucial role in the global maritime industry. The country is making significant strides towards sustainable and environmentally sound ship recycling practices. We've invited Mohammed Zahirul Islam, Managing Director of the first recycling facility in Bangladesh to achieve statement of compliance under the convention as guest speaker for our 15+15 webinar next week. It lasts 30 minutes and starts as Wednesday 20 November at 12:00 UTC. It will be moderated by BIMCO's own expert, Gudrun Janssens - your questions will be very welcome! Let's make our oceans quieter and safer! Ships must cut underwater noise or face mandatory regulation. The International Chamber of Shipping and BIMCO's Underwater Radiated Noise Guide helps the shipping industry to tackle this issue. The guide highlights the importance of energy efficiency measures, which also reduce underwater noise. This noise affects marine life and, consequently, coastal communities. You can pre-order the guide from ICS Publications: https://lnkd.in/eS_vapcY #UnderwaterRadiatedNoise #ShipsAndShipping #MarineLife

On Wednesday, BIMCO launched a Ship Recycling Alliance at the TradeWinds Ship Recycling Forum 2024 in Copenhagen. Launching the alliance, BIMCO Secretary General & CEO, David Loosley said: “Today, BIMCO is launching a Ship Recycling Alliance. The alliance is born out of the need to bring together the voices of the ship recycling industry and the shipping industry and the goal is to help facilitate the global implementation of the Hong Kong Convention and accelerate the safe and environmentally responsible recycling of ships. We, in this room, are very aware that six months from now, the Hong Kong Convention will enter into force. This, we believe, will change the face of ship recycling. When done the right way, ship recycling is safe for workers and the environment and holds tremendous potential for supporting the circular economy. We are not there yet. This is work in progress. The core of the BIMCO Ship Recycling Alliance is to help the ship recycling industry and the shipping industry get there.” #BIMCO #ShipRecycling #ShipsAndShipping

Enclosed spaces on board ships are a known safety risk, yet accidents and tragically even deaths continue to occur. We applaud the IMO's continued commitment to enhancing safety in enclosed spaces at the recent 10th session of the Sub-Committee on Carriage of Cargoes and Containers (CCC). Significant progress was made in revising resolution A.1050(27) to ensure the safety of personnel entering enclosed spaces on board ships. During the session, a working group meticulously reviewed the draft revised recommendations for entering enclosed spaces aboard ships. They incorporated various comments and proposals, resulting in a comprehensive and updated set of guidelines. Who wouldn't want faster and more efficient supply chains? GMG - Giga Maritime Group of Malaysia is seeing most of its clients adopt electronic Bills of Lading. Just over a year since the UK’s Electronic Trade Documents Act (ETDA) 2023 came into force, they are leveraging the legislation to transition their business to a 100% paperless bill of lading system. The ETDA 2023 recognises electronic Bills of Lading as legally equivalent to their paper counterparts under English law. This innovative move by GIGA promises faster and more efficient supply chains, with most of their clients already opting for digital eBLs. Read all about eBLs and about how GMG Giga is pioneering in the field at https://lnkd.in/e53tCXGN #eBL #GlobalTrade #Digitalisation

BIMCO supports educational initiatives such as student visits, presentations and work placements to promote shipping as an attractive industry. We have, for years, been welcoming students from the World Maritime University and other educational institutions to explain the various activities we are involved in and liaise with existing and future stakeholders in the industry. We recently hosted two high school students, Gina Zein and Zaynah Mah Raza, at BIMCO’s headquarters in Copenhagen. The work placement was an integral part of their International Business Baccalaureate (IBB) studies at the Niels Brock International Gymnasium and is designed to give the students a firsthand look at the maritime industry. Thanks to Erik Jensby, Zana Jaganjac and a number of other colleagues for taking the time to introduce BIMCO and explain how the industry works.
