CREATIVITY - Lee Chunk-Hak, a member of the Korean Academy of Science and Technology (KAST) and Chief Scientist at Forigin, was the first in the world to propose the marvellous strategy of employing quorum quenching (QQ) in stopping microbial communication (i.e. quorum sensing, QS) in biofouling control of membrane bioreactors (MBRs) for wastewater treatment. Prof. Lee recently visited our headquarter and delivered a lecture on the charm of creativity. He shared his story about his years at Seoul National University while leading the Institute for Environmental Protection and Safety (IEPS), a supporting department of Seoul National University. Prof. Lee introduced the concept of two circles: one representing our organization and status quo, while the other symbolizing the unique, complex, and diverse paths known only to ourselves - childhood, growth, and personal journeys. The shade where these two circles meet is where creativity lies dormant. We can unearth creativity together through individual initiative and managerial encouragement and inclusion. In Prof. Lee's experience, the transformative impact of "shade" from IEPS (as in the 2nd picture) has elevated this typically elusive department into a star, delivering engaging security lectures that have been unprecedentedly warmly received by students.. CARBON-NEUTRAL PARK - Biosphere 3 (Dameisha Vanke Center), developed by Vanke, in Shenzhen, China gives an example on how to accelerate the global climate transition. There is an actionable concept combining DEWATS (Decentralized Wastewater Treatment Systems) with renewable energy. At Biosphere 3, the smart microgrid comprises distributed energy storage, DC distribution grid, building integrated with PV, etc. This Microgrid empowers the building loads and hardware. Black soldier flies are used to break down the food waste. whilst microbial biotechnology is leveraged to clarify the organic wastewater. A Forigin Panda-Box of 0.5m3/day is installed, using microbial biotechnology to clarify wastewater organically. There is a sustainable water cycle for plant irrigation and lush landscapes.. The embodied carbon - the cumulative greenhouse gas emissions associated with the project, is calculated in this case. CASE STUDY of Intercepting Domestic Wastewater from a River Project name: township wastewater treatment project at Shiya Bridge, Gushan Town, Yongkang, Zhejiang, China Project scale: a 200 cubic meters/day Bee-Box Coverage: benefiting 2,000-2,500 people Inlet water quality: domestic wastewater mixed in river tributary Effluent standard: Class III in Environmental Quality Standard for Surface Water in China (GB3838-2002) 🔎 Situation:   (1) According to the hydrological data of past years, the water level of the riverbank rises in the rainy season, and reaches a considerable height at the highest level. In order to ensure the normal operation of the equipment in the rainy season, the equipment needs to be installed at a higher place;   (2) An equalization tank has already been installed at site, and in order to save land space, the equipment can be placed above the equalization tank to make full use of the space. The equipment needs to have better anti-corrosion measures.   For the winter temperature conditions at the site, we add a thermal insulation layer on the outside of the equipment to ensure that the equipment is not affected by the cold weather and that the water quality is up to standard in winter;   (4) The site is relatively small, the maintenance space is limited. The equipment itself needs to be designed with sufficient space to meet the requirements for equipment maintenance. 💡 Solutions:   A set of integrated wastewater treatment system needs to be built on the bank.   The Bee-Box has been strategically positioned at an elevated location along the tributary bank to safeguard against potential flooding. Additionally, a dam has been constructed to intercept and isolate the contaminated upstream tributary flow, primarily affected by domestic wastewater. This proactive measure prevents the polluted water from mingling with the main river flow. Following this, the water is pumped into the Bee-Box, thoroughly treated, and subsequently released downstream, ensuring the preservation of water quality.
