According to a recent report from Xeneta, shippers and forwarders need to prepare now to avoid being “at the mercy of the market.” Key Takeaways: Surging Demand: After six months of consecutive double-digit growth in air freight demand, the market is strategizing for Q4 2024. Expectations are high for increased spot rates and potential peak season surcharges. Market Dynamics: In June, global air cargo spot rates spiked 17% year-over-year to $2.62 per kilogram, driven by e-commerce growth, ocean disruptions due to Red Sea conflicts, and increased manufacturing activity. Strategic Planning: Shippers with long-term capacity agreements will benefit from more stable rates, while those dependent on spot market rates may face hefty premiums. The share of contracts lasting more than six months grew to 28% in Q2 2024, indicating a shift towards avoiding peak season fluctuations. June Air Freight by the Numbers: 13% YoY increase in global air cargo demand $2.62 Average spot rate per kilogram 59% Global dynamic load factor Regional Insights: Southeast Asia to the U.S. recorded the largest spot rate jump, up 14% YoY to $5.32 per kilogram. Looking Ahead: With the mix of ocean shipping chaos, an upturn in manufacturing activities, and fear of missing out, balancing short and long-term contracts is crucial.
