What if a building could adapt, evolve, even be reinvented? Most buildings are fixed points in time — built, used, and eventually demolished. But the newly completed First Building at Bradfield City Centre in Western Sydney, Australia is different. It challenges the status quo. Designed by Hassell and informed by Djinjama, a First Nations cultural research and design agency, this landmark building is inspired by its location on the Cumberland Plain. It blends architecture with the surrounding landscape, honouring Country and its enduring narratives. At its core is Stage 1 of the Advanced Manufacturing Readiness Facility (AMRF) — housed within a structure built for transformation. Modular, reusable, and crafted from natural materials like rammed earth and recycled tiles, the First Building isn’t just sustainable — it’s circular by design. Now, imagine if every city embraced these principles — where our built environment moves with nature, not against it. How would that transform the way we live and the way we work? How would it reshape our relationship with the world around us? More than a structure, the First Building has the potential to be a genuine new beginning. 🔗 Explore the vision, design and innovation behind the First Building: https://lnkd.in/gXNcdm-g 📷 Photo 1 and 3 by Vinchy Wu (Hassell), Photo 2 by Mark Syke #BradfieldCityCentre Bradfield Development Authority #RegenerativeDesign #SustainableFuture #Architecture #Design #LandscapeDesign #PlacesPeopleLove

Our design values are shared globally across all our studios, by the talented people who work in them: architects, interior designers, landscape architects, urban designers, planners and specialist consultants. We work across a broad range of scales, from the interior design of a boutique retail store through to major public architecture and strategic urban planning for cities. And we work together in integrated design teams because they produce the best outcomes for our clients. Our focus is on people and how we create better, more meaningful experiences for them. We do that through creative, holistic thinking, a deep knowledge base and a rigorous design process. “One of the real privileges is seeing an idea on a piece of paper in 2018 being envisaged here, right down to each individual plant. I can’t wait for spring to see how it will all come to life,” says Principal Jon Hazelwood. Don’t miss seeing Jon discuss the concept behind the vibrant Test Garden for Laak Boorndap at Fed Square on Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Country — a 24/7 pop-up oasis showcasing the future of urban greening in the Melbourne Arts Precinct, Australia, in the video below. This pop-up garden is a living experiment, a test bed for the naturalistic planting style of Laak Boorndap. It’s not just about beauty — it’s about resilience. Each plant is part of a conversation on climate change, biodiversity and ecology. What thrives here? What struggles? And what can this tell us about the future of our cities? Step inside, wander through the ever-changing, continuously flowering space, and experience firsthand how nature teaches us. 🔗 Explore more: https://lnkd.in/gTpWhf4Q ▶ Video by Rat & Dragon With thanks to Melbourne Arts Precinct Corporation (MAP Co), Katrina Sedgwick, Susie Quinton and Jac Semmler Designed by Hassell in collaboration with Super Bloom | Plant Practice , James Hitchmough and Nigel Dunnett. The Hope Village Community Building in eastern Tanzania aims to be a beacon of hope and healing by providing safe and supportive spaces for children who have faced hardship or unsafe home environments. A highlight of the project is its innovative roof structure — a true testament to sustainability and creativity. Working alongside structural engineers at Eckersley O'Callaghan, we designed a roof using small, locally sourced timber sections. These smaller pieces, often overlooked because most large locally sourced timber is exported internationally, are connected to form a large-scale, fabric-like material. The result is an elegant, woven timber ‘blanket’ that drapes gracefully over the central steel spine of the hall and is clad with readily available corrugated metal sheet panels. The multi-functional building designed by Hassell in collaboration with the charity foundation One Heart Foundation, includes a school, housing, and play areas and will serve as a central community meeting space, providing local employment and training opportunities. This collaborative effort stands as a testament to the power of design in fostering community resilience and creating spaces that are open, welcoming, and supportive. 🔗 Learn more about our sustainable community building in Hope Village, Tanzania here: https://lnkd.in/gFZqpRW6 🖼 Imagery by IMIGO.LT and IAAC #CommunityBuilding #TimberConstruction #SustainableDesign #CommunityResilience #Design #Tanzania #SocialValue

Great cities aren’t just efficient; they’re human. What if we could elevate transport-oriented developments (TODs) — those clusters of homes, offices, and public spaces orbiting train stations and bus hubs — into vibrant communities that transform how we live, work, and connect? Our designs for Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport is a case in point. Embedding stations within a green rail corridor does something radical — the stations don’t compete with their natural setting; they complement it. Each stop isn’t just an interchange but a destination designed to foster community, sustainability, and economic growth. Then there’s The First Building in Bradfield, Western Sydney — a new city rising from the ground up. Designed for adaptability, its modular timber structure can expand, shift, even be reassembled elsewhere as the city evolves. It’s a bold experiment in circular economy thinking. By designing for inclusivity, culture, and sustainability, we’re not just building infrastructure — we’re shaping the way communities will thrive for generations. 🔗 Learn more about transport-oriented developments: https://lnkd.in/gkRzkQcN #Hassell #TransportOrientedDevelopments #PublicSpaces #PlaceMaking

What makes a great city? Is it the skyline, the culture, the energy? Or is it something less obvious — the way people move through it? When it comes to rail design our international team of designers continually pushes the boundaries of the urban transport experience. Over the past decade, our Hong Kong studio has been at the heart of shaping the way people move through Hong Kong and Shenzhen. Together with local contractors, engineers, and consultants, we’ve partnered with government agencies and rail operators to imagine, plan and bring to life some of the region’s most ambitious transportation projects – see the Hassell projects highlighted in the video below. But the journey doesn’t stop here. With Hong Kong and Shenzhen setting their sights on a future where integrated transport networks support a population surge of over 2 million in the Northern Metropolis, the next chapter is just beginning. At Hassell, we’re thrilled to be part of this transformative story, crafting passenger-focused infrastructure and vibrant, thriving urban spaces — always in close collaboration with our design partners and clients. The future is moving fast, and we’re ready to shape it. 🔗 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gVdFYUxF 🔗 Discover more of our award-winning urban transport and rail design: https://lnkd.in/gTcnRwby #Infrastructure #UrbanTransport #Hassell #Architecture #UrbanPlanning #Mobility #PlacesPeopleLove #HongKong #Shenzhen MTR Corporation Limited 香港鐵路有限公司 Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD), Hong Kong SAR Government AECOM Arup WSP Meinhardt Group Mott MacDonald Aurecon Asia Infrastructure Solutions Dragages Hong Kong Limited China Harbour Engineering Co. What makes a place feel alive? It’s not just the buildings — it’s the way people move, gather and linger within them. Darling Harbour is being reimagined. Snohetta+Hassell’s vision for Harbourside transforms this renowned Sydney location into a dynamic mixed-use precinct. Picture 10,000 sqm of open space, a new public park, a rich mix of restaurants, bars, and retail, plus a waterfront plaza and promenade connecting the Pyrmont area to the harbour. At its heart, a 42-storey residential tower rises as a landmark, anchored in a site deep with history. Harbourside is designed for today’s community — residents, workers, and visitors — while remaining adaptable and sustainable for generations to come. Sustainability is paramount here. With biodiverse planting and First Nations knowledge shaping the landscape, Harbourside integrates cultural depth and ecological sensitivity into its very essence, creating a new chapter for Sydney’s waterfront. 🔗 Discover more about our design for Harbourside here: https://lnkd.in/gN5NxJXh 🖼 Imagery by WAX #Hassell #HarboursideRedevelopment #MixedUsePrecinct #Architecture #Design #DarlingHarbour #PlacesPeopleLove BILA GROUP Djinjama Snøhetta Clarence Slockee

The retail stores of tomorrow — according to our recent The Future of Retail report — will be intimate, immersive environments with unique, visually inviting storefronts. There’ll be spaces that incorporate natural light, plants and home-like comforts to foster a sense of wellbeing and strengthen emotional connections between customers and brands. Our latest research highlights six key design strategies shaping this shift, including a strong street presence, biophilic design and indoor-outdoor integration. Unlike the uniform structures of monolithic shopping malls, these smaller street-level stores enable more flexible, human-centred spaces that prioritise ease, warmth and a sense of belonging. This reimagined approach to retail transforms stores into more than just places to shop — they become experiences built on community and meaningful engagement. 🔗 Discover more about The Future of Retail in our report here: https://lnkd.in/gKUtsBkz #TheFutureOfRetail #RetailResearch #TheFutureOfShopping #TheFutureConsumer #ExperientialRetail #PlacesPeopleLove #TheShopsOfTheFuture

Mental health care is evolving, and design is helping to lead the way. At Hassell, we believe healing environments should support not just patients but also their families, carers, and staff. The Ipswich Hospital Acute Mental Health Unit is a testament to this philosophy. This award-winning, 64-bed facility in Ipswich, Australia, redefines care by prioritising recovery-focused, whole-person support. Every detail — from architecture to interiors to landscaping — works in harmony to create a space that nurtures dignity, connection, and healing. As Damien Russell, Nursing Director Community and Acute Mental Health Service, of West Moreton Hospital and Health Service notes, "The design of the spaces, both inside and out, really makes a difference. It helps calm patients, reduces agitation, and even supports faster recovery." 🔗 Discover what Hassell Principal Stephen Watson has to say about redefining care through design: https://lnkd.in/eTNTBJ8t #DesignForMentalHealth #HealingLandscapes #CoDesign #MentalHealth #HealthDesign Queensland Health
