At #COFO27 in Rome, #bamboo's potential to strengthen the bioeconomy was a key focus. 🎋🤝 From July 22-26, 2024, high-level representatives, heads of forest services, government officials, and partner organizations gathered at the 27th Session of the Committee on Forestry (COFO 27) to discuss emerging policy and technical guidance for forestry. On July 24, INBAR and FAO co-hosted a side event on “Bamboo-based innovation to harness bioeconomy solutions,” moderated by INBAR Global Policy Officer Borja De La Peña Escardó - 艾博哈. Key discussions highlighted bamboo's role in combating climate change, plastic pollution, and driving sustainable supply chains. Bamboo Survey Kicks Off in Peru 🎋 Fieldwork in northeastern Peru aims to identify bamboo species in its diverse landscapes. Peru, a key region for bamboo diversity, offers vast potential for studying various species due to its unique geography and microclimates. The “BAMBÚ NORORIENTE” project, co-financed by the Plan Binacional de Desarrollo de la Región Fronteriza Perú - Ecuador, Capítulo Perú and Servicio Nacional Forestal y de Fauna Silvestre (SERFOR), is undertaking a significant study to identify Guadua bamboo species in northeastern Peru. This major initiative involves collaboration with the National Laboratory for Plant Identification and Characterization at the University of Guadalajara, Mexico, using advanced molecular tools to analyze bamboo plants. The study is led by Dr. Eduardo Ruiz and supported by INBAR’s technical team, the study will preserve specimens in national herbaria with precise location data. INBAR worked together with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) in the Amazon region of Ecuador to support Indigenous communities in improving their skills and infrastructure for bamboo collection, preservation and storage. These collaborative efforts led to INBAR's invitation to the Second Edition of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD - OCDE) Local Skills Week 2024. In the session on Workforce Development and Local Green Investments: A Focus on Latin America and the Caribbean, INBAR highlighted: 🎋 Successful Implementation: The Bamboo Sustainable Construction Workshop School in Manabi showcased how INBAR’s integrated approach to workforce development, capacity building, stakeholder inclusion, and mid-term training programs can boost local bamboo development. 🎋 Project Impact: Graduates from the Manabí Workshop School are now providing bamboo frames for over 700 houses in Ecuador, underscoring the critical role of public-private partnerships. Fernando Lugris, Ambassador of Uruguay to China, to discuss Uruguay’s imminent accession as the 51st Member State of INBAR.
