Refresh » Repurpose » Reimagine Over 80% of the buildings that will be standing by 2050 have already been built, so we need to focus on retrofitting these existing structures if we’re to achieve net zero by the same year. Having worked on various scales of retrofit across multiple sectors, we know there are no cookie-cutter solutions. Therefore, we categorise the scope of works required for any given project using our sliding scale of intervention. In part 1 of our three-part retrofit blog series, Head of Sustainability Oliver Hall outlines our approach to retrofit by revisiting some of our favourite case studies: https://lnkd.in/etFFTcNP #retrofit #makeneutral #sustainabledesign #makearchitects

🌟 Celebrating 20 Years of Make Architects & the transformation of the ERCO Dover Street Showroom! 🌟 This October, Make Architects, founded by Dr Ken Shuttleworth, celebrated two decades of architectural innovation. It is a significant milestone, for both Make and ERCO, marking 20 years since the two collaborated on their first project together—the transformation of ERCO's Dover Street Showroom in London. ERCO welcomed Ken back to Dover Street, to reflect on the journey of Make Architects, the showroom project, and the future of architecture and lighting design, in a conversation with ERCO UK’s Technical Director, Nigel Sylvester. Ken & Nigel, explored the synergy of architecture and lighting, the legacy of visionary designs, and what the future holds for human-centric and sustainable design. 📖 Read more on their inspiring conversation and watch the video below >> https://lnkd.in/egfTf9D7 ✨ Book your visit to our London showroom and see the lasting impact of this collaboration firsthand - rsvp.uk@erco.com 📽: https://lnkd.in/ef6uY32d #ERCO #MakeArchitects #ArchitecturalInnovation #ArchitecturalLighting #HumanCentricDesign

In the first of a two-part reflection series on #MakeNeutralDay 2024, Director Jason Parker outlines two of the four workshops from the day: Social Impact at Make and Rus in Urbe (country in the city). 🔑 Christopher J. and Greg Willis presented on behalf of Make Change – our social impact working group – to help define, demonstrate and measure Make's approach to social impact. Key takeaways highlighted the importance of conducting a culture and community audit at the early stages of a project, providing an opportunity to understand and hear first-hand the diverse needs of different people impacted by our designs. 🌳 Kate F. in our Communications team drew on her literature background, incorporating etymology and literary analysis to explore how humans and nature have co-existed in cities for millennia. At Hawkins\Brown, we believe in gathering the right knowledge through research, providing future generations with the right building blocks to create a better built environment. This is why we are so proud to be runners-up in the knowledge-sharing category of the Regenerative Architecture Index. Here are some ways we share our knowledge: 👨🔬 HB:ERT, our whole life carbon measurement tool, is available for free to download via our website 👨🔬 We run an internal bursary scheme for research, which has created studies on daylighting, clean air, circular economy and much more 👨🔬We conduct Post Occupancy Evaluations (POE) on our projects whenever possible - our POE for Chobham Manor in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park (pictured) even won the AJ Sustainability Initiative Award 2023! Check in again next week when we'll be moving on to Part 2 of the Architecture Today Regenerative Architecture Index, "Co-evolving with nature"! #regenerativearchitectureindex #regenerativearchitecture #sustainability #beingagoodancestor #designphilosophy #designthinking #research Make Architects

A building that really stands out from the landscape in #Manchester, thanks to Europe's Largest Living Wall... Eden at New Bailey... A great project, and one we are very proud to share this great case study video of, that we created for Viritopia, who planned, grew, and installed the thousands of plants to create such a spectacular-looking building! Massive thanks to Orkney and Nimisha for working with us on this video! #SCOPICPortfolio #videoproductioncompany #digitalmarketing

Our annual #MakeNeutralDay is always a great opportunity to set aside our tools, come together as a practice and build on our sustainability knowledge. 2024 saw Makers from our sustainability and social impact teams lead workshops on our collective role in creating sustainable and inclusive communities, creatively reimagining existing structures in urban contexts and exploring nature in the city through storytelling. A special thank you to our joint keynote speakers, Georgina Nimmo and Olivia Sutcliffe from Savills' Social Value team, for sharing their strategic social value approach across the entire asset lifecycle. Stay tuned for the write-ups to follow in the coming weeks. 🔗Explore Make Neutral: https://lnkd.in/e92CFqXz Oliver Hall | Christopher J. | Greg Willis | Kate F. | Ian Hunter | Peter Greaves | Materials Council #makeneutral #makechange #materials #sustainabledesign #socialimpact #socialvalue #makearchitects

City & Docklands, together with Gaw Capital are pleased to announce that One East Point on the Isle of Dogs, has been granted planning consent for the delivery of 450 new homes (with a 35% affordable housing allocation) together with a range of amenities that will transform the site. The new design by Make Architects for the 52-storey, 170m tower, will replace the currently underutilised office block and create a much improved public realm to include gallery spaces, health & wellbeing facilities, plus retail and leisure, whilst also increasing the opportunities for community engagement. Simon Passer, MD of City & Docklands, says: “We are delighted with the positive outcome achieved at planning committee for One East Point, which will unlock underutilised office buildings to provide much needed housing in this well-connected East London location. The project will bring significant improvements to the local community, including 120 affordable homes, a retail and leisure offering, and a much-enhanced public realm.” Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/eDE4FVXr #regeneration #londonresidential #newdevelopment #community #placemaking

One East Point on the Isle of Dogs has been granted planning consent, making way for 450 new homes (35% of which are affordable) and a range of community amenities to transform the site. Commissioned by Gaw Capital and City & Docklands, our design for the 52-storey, 170m tower will replace an underutilised office block and create new opportunities for community engagement. By setting the building footprint back, we’re creating new public spaces that include gardens, a landscaped ‘underline’ beneath South Quay DLR Station, and a waterfront square. The tower’s stepped, orthogonal form features three shared terraces and maximises residential amenity. The podium also includes gallery spaces, health and wellbeing facilities, retail stores and restaurants, plus a 15,000ft² multipurpose youth centre. 🔗Learn more on One East Point: https://lnkd.in/eB3432zc 🔗Read the full write-up: https://lnkd.in/eyQxcPNc #oneeastpoint #isleofdogs #tallbuildings #residentialbuildings #communityengagement #makearchitects Frank Filskow | Simon Robins | Simon Whitehead | Kevin K. | Simon Passer
