Congrats to construction team The Beck Group / EJ Smith Construction for their stellar and safe work on the new Crow Museum of Asian Art at the O'Donnell Athenaeum at The University of Texas at Dallas!

How important do you find sustainable facades and urban landscapes and adaptive reuse architecture, for the times we are living in? We asked two of today's great architects, Arne EMERSON, Partner at Morphosis, USA, Buşra AL, Founder of PLUG Office, Turkey, and an important leader of the European architects community, Judith KIMPIAN, Chairman of the Architects’ Council of Europe’s (ACE) Sustainable Architecture Group, UK. GATE Precast has been recognized with the 2024 PCI Sidney Freedman Craftsmanship award for their beautiful work on the precast concrete facade at the Crow Museum of Asian Art !

Last week was a big one! In addition to opening a new location for the Crow Museum of Asian Art and the Dallas Museum of Art at The University of Texas at Dallas, we also broke ground on the Performance Hall and Music Building, representing Phase II of the Edith and Peter O'Donnell Jr. Athenaeum. The new home for the music program of the Bass School at UT Dallas has classrooms, rehearsal spaces, recording studio, and a 680-seat vineyard-style performance hall designed for precise, tunable acoustics and a sense of intimacy between audience and performer. With open public areas, large glass windows connecting the interior to the plaza, and wrap-around outdoor spaces for events, the design creates a strong link between the building and campus. As one of the few entities in the U.S. solely dedicated to Asian art, and the largest in the Southwest, the Crow Museum of Asian Art collection is diverse in medium and scale. Beyond designing the building itself, we also provided exhibition design services for the Crow collection galleries, working closely with the director Amy Hofland and curator Dr. Natalia Di Pietrantoniour to create immersive environments that respond to the size and scale of objects in the collection. The design aims to create a unique, color-rich environment for each collection by creating “rooms within rooms”. Each exhibit display design is an intimate setting, sized appropriately to match each type of object, where art and viewer are connected. Key galleries in the building are designed to display works in naturally lit conditions, with lightwells and window slits that permit indirect northern light to enter these galleries. A true highlight of this summer was touring the Edith and Peter O’Donnell Jr. Athenaeum, set to open later this year. The two-story 56,607 SF building is located on the southeastern edge of the The University of Texas at Dallas campus. The ground floor includes the lobby and event space, research, and education rooms. The second floor will house the Crow Museum of Asian Art and DMA collections, each with approximately 10,000 SF of gallery space. Designed for transparency and natural light, the Phase I Museum at the O’Donnell Athenaeum at The University of Texas at Dallas uses large expanses of glass and lightwells in the galleries, lobby and Brettell Reading Room to create a strong connection between the art, visitors and passersby, putting art on display to the campus and larger community. The first floor Brettell Reading Room offers a serene study and convening space dedicated to the memory of Dr. Richard Brettell and designed to hold his donated personal library. The reading room opens to the plaza, with a seminar room for lectures and workshops, making the space an active part of the campus energized by learning, discussion, and study.
