    Stop saying 'voice-over' when you mean 'dubbing'! 😤 It's time to clear up one of the biggest mix-ups in the localization industry: voice-over vs. dubbing. We hear them used interchangeably all the time, but they're distinctly different techniques! ✅ Voice-over = The narration is layered over the original audio. You still hear the original actors, but there's an additional voice translating or providing commentary. Think documentaries or news reports. ☑ Dubbing = A complete replacement of the original audio with a new recording in a different language. The actors' lip movements are (ideally) synced to the new dialogue. Think foreign films or animated shows. So why the mix-up? It often boils down to geography 🌎 Some regions, like Europe and Latin America, embrace dubbing wholeheartedly. On the other hand, English-speaking countries and parts of the Middle East tend to favor voice-overs. Depending on where you are, you might rarely encounter the other technique.     The monkey king is truly a king 🙊👑 Last week, we hinted that Black Myth: Wukong might do well on release day. Well, that was the understatement of the year. Yesterday's release was a massive success. With 2,223,179 players on day one, it's now Steam's most-played single-player game EVER 🥇 And check out the games it left behind: ✔Palworld (multiplayer): 2,101,867 players ✔Counter-Strike 2 (multiplayer): 1,818,773 players. ✔Lost Ark (multiplayer): 1,325,305 players. ✔Dota 2 (multiplayer): 1,295,114 players. ✔Cyberpunk 2077: 1,054,388 players. ✔Elden Ring: 953,426 players. ✔New World (multiplayer): 913,634 players. ✔Hogwarts Legacy: 879,308 players. ✔Baldur's Gate 3: 875,343 players. Yes, you read that right—it beat several multiplayer giants. For a single-player game to pull these numbers is nothing short of incredible. The only game it didn’t top? PUBG: Battlegrounds. Now, there are plenty of reasons why this game is doing so well (game quality, obviously, and, well, marketing👀). But here's something worth highlighting: The game was localized into 12 languages—a standard practice these days. But what really sets it apart is their global release strategy. They communicated clearly and effectively, announcing the release in not just one or two, but 15 different time zones. From London to Dubai, Beijing to Mexico City—they made sure every player knew exactly when to dive in.     There are just 7 days left until the release of one of this summer's most anticipated games—Black Myth: Wukong 🐒 🙈 And yet, the monkey king is already topping Steam's Global Top Seller list 🚀 Only falling behind 1 free game. While it might not reach #GenshinImpact's incredible success, the future looks bright for Black Myth: Wukong. 📈 Quick reminder: Genshin went from zero to hero, reaching $5 billion in revenue in just four years! No wonder its studio, miHoYo, was valued at $23 billion this year. But this post isn't about Genshin's tremendous value or even how amazing Black Myth: Wukong looks (and it does look fantastic!). It's rather about the recent increase of AAA-looking titles coming from Chinese developers. In the past few years, we have seen the market shift (partially) away from free-to-play and mobile games and produce more narrative-driven games with stunning graphics and gameplay. The industry is gearing up to produce blockbuster titles similar to Japan's beloved franchises like #FinalFantasy and #Zelda. In fact, there are already some exciting upcoming titles: ✅ Daba: Land of Water Scar ✅ Swordsman Love: The Story of Xie Yun Liu ✅ Where Winds Meet and Phantom Blade Zero And let's not forget, the Chinese gaming industry is massive.     Can Claude, a language model, truly replace traditional translation systems? Here’s what recent data reveals 💡 Recent findings suggest that Anthropic’s Claude 3 is reaching state-of-the-art levels in translation performance. When translating the FLORES-200 data into English, Claude outperformed traditional machine translation systems in 21 languages (or 56.9% of the time). However, there’s a catch 👇 When tested on new (and "unseen") data, Claude’s performance dropped significantly, only outperforming traditional systems in 9 languages—a 31.9% drop! 📉 Why? Data contamination. In simpler terms, Claude was likely trained on the FLORES-200 data, which skews the results. Despite this issue, Claude still performs at SOTA levels. It may not be good enough to be part of your pipeline yet, but newer models (Sonnet 3.5 and beyond) may very well be. Interested in a deeper understanding of Claude's translation performance?
