On October 13, we recognize the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, a vital opportunity to promote global awareness about disaster risks and effective strategies for mitigation. As natural and anthropogenic disasters become increasingly frequent, understanding their far-reaching impacts is essential. This year’s theme emphasizes the importance of education in empowering children for a disaster-resilient future. With approximately 1 billion children globally facing extremely high threats from climate change and disasters, it is imperative to consider their unique vulnerabilities and needs in disaster risk reduction strategies. However, as UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated, “Children are more than victims of disaster. They have a significant stake in the future, and their ideas and innovations can reduce risk and build resilience.” Empowering children with opportunities to contribute to reducing disaster risks is crucial to providing them with levers for #Innovation and making their ideas come true! At WAITRO, we prioritize the benefits that science and technology research can bring to the well-being of future generations. Our members worldwide are champions in both research and outreach to youth through diverse educational initiatives: hackathons, Teknofest, books, workshops, and podcasts.
