Congratulations to our own Andy Sedgwick, who has been made honorary fellow by the RIBA. Andy is someone everyone wants on their team, especially when the chips are down and wise decisions need to be made. Last year, Andy talked about what we mean at Arup when we talk about being committed to ‘straight and honourable dealings’. This is one of our core aims, and Andy's message is an important one.

The introduction of the collaborative NEC contract has been crucial in our work to accelerate the reconstruction of schools, healthcare facilities, and flood prevention infrastructure - improving the lives of millions in Peru. Following the success of this effort, the UK Embassy in Peru (Embajada Británica Lima) has launched the first-ever Spanish translation of the NEC4 contract, helping to standardise its use across the country. This is the first time the NEC contract has been translated into another language. By fostering transparency and proactive collaboration between the client and contractor, NEC helps prevent costly disputes and delays, so that vital infrastructure is delivered faster and to the highest standards. Watch this short film to see how the UK Delivery Team - including us, Mace, and Gleeds - has successfully implemented NEC for projects in Peru with our partner, Autoridad Nacional de Infraestructura (ANIN). ‘’We all have power. Our voice, our unity, our platforms - we are all drops in the ocean, and drops make the ocean.” Last week, we had the privilege of hosting ‘In Conversation with Khalida Popal’ in our Leeds office, a powerful discussion on resilience, equality, and the role of sport in driving change. Khalida Popal, the founder of Girl Power Organisation and former captain of the Afghanistan women’s national football team, shared her incredible journey - from breaking barriers in Afghan football to advocating for women’s rights and supporting refugee communities worldwide. Her message was clear: progress has been made, but there is still so much to do. “We celebrate history and achievements, but women around the world still face barriers to equal participation in society.” As we reflect on International Women’s Day and this year’s theme - For all women and girls: rights, equality, empowerment - Khalida’s words remind us of our collective responsibility. At Arup, we are committed to fostering an inclusive environment where women can reach their full potential. Our ConnectWomen network is just one example of how we support women throughout their careers, ensuring that doors remain open for the next generation. Thank you to Khalida and everyone who joined us for this inspiring conversation. Let’s keep the momentum going. #InternationalWomensDay #IWD2025 #Equality #Empowerment #WomenInLeadership #ConnectWomen

Last week we met with the Chancellor of the Exchequer, The Rt Hon Rachel Reeves MP; British High Commissioner to South Africa, Antony Phillipson CMG; His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner for Africa, John Humphrey; and UK Department for Business and Trade (DBT) Regional Director, Chim Chalemera; and our very own Tessa Brunette, Associate Director and Sustainability Lead for Africa, India and Middle East, at Cape Town’s historic V&A Waterfront. As part of the team involved in the Waterfront development - alongside Heatherwick studio and Turner & Townsend - we are proud to support the design, planning and delivery of infrastructure on an international scale. As Rachel Reeves MP comments: “I welcome the news that British engineering firm Arup has won key contracts to support South Africa’s ambitions to boost green and sustainable growth across the country, not only contributing to the design of more resilient infrastructure but also working with public and private sector clients to improve the energy efficiency of buildings here in Cape Town and across South Africa.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/ej5GKxQ5 #WeAreArup #SouthAfrica #SustainableGrowth #Sustainability #EnergyEfficiency

The Black Library in Monticello, New York, is a space dedicated to celebrating Black history and culture. It offers a welcoming environment for everyone in the county, fostering a deeper understanding of Black culture, advocating for racial justice and supporting local artists. As part of our Community Engagement Programme, we collaborated pro bono with The Black Library to transform an old bank building into a vibrant community venue and art space. Through space planning, experience design, and audio-visual design, we helped bring the vision of residents and artists to life, enhancing the lives of Monticello’s community Learn more about this project: https://lnkd.in/e6_bdHup

🌟 Day 2 at International Energy Week 🌟 I'm excited to have had the opportunity to attend the International Energy Week hosted by my chartered institution, the Energy Institute. A particular highlight of today was undoubtedly the POWERful Women speed-networking lunch. It was inspiring to connect with so many talented and driven women who are making significant strides in the energy sector. 💡 The discussions were not only empowering (forgive the pun) but also provided valuable insights into the future of energy. It was a reminder of the importance of diversity and inclusion in bringing a breath of perspectives, which ultimately drives innovation and progress. In contrast with yesterday's more supply-focused discussions, a number of the speakers and panellists in today's sessions have emphasised the importance of the demand and consumer-lead transition at a local scale. At Arup, our Urban Energy and Integrated Energy Systems teams in the UK have been a leading force in the delivery of Local Area Energy Planning around the country. Our work focuses on creating tangible, data-driven, and actionable net-zero pathways tailored to the unique needs of local areas. The conversations at the conference today have reinforced the importance of our mission and the impact we can make. Excited to bring these insights back to our team and continue our journey towards a more sustainable energy future! 🌍🔋 #InternationalEnergyWeek #EnergyInstitute #PowerfulWomen #Networking #Sustainability #LocalAreaEnergyPlanning #Arup
