Indigenous territories and peoples are key to achieving #COP16’s 30×30 target, write Hon. Trevor Mahaga and Ricardo Camilo Niño Izquierdo in a commentary published ahead of this week's Conference of the Parties under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) "It is time to recognize that the Western conservation model has serious historical flaws and cannot achieve global targets alone," they write. "We, Indigenous peoples, offer another way." Central to the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework is the ambition to protect 30% of the planet’s lands, waters, and seas by 2030, known as the 30×30 target. Yet, this goal cannot be realized without the integral role of Indigenous communities, Mahaga and Izquierdo note. Indigenous peoples are stewards of approximately 40% of Earth’s remaining intact ecosystems, with their lands often showcasing more effective conservation outcomes than state-managed protected areas. In the Amazon, for instance, deforestation rates in Indigenous territories are significantly lower than in other regions, highlighting their critical role in preserving biodiversity. Despite the clear evidence, the rights and contributions of Indigenous communities are frequently overlooked. Globally, Indigenous groups face the threat of forced displacement in the name of conservation, a practice that undermines the very systems that have safeguarded biodiversity for millennia. In Colombia, legal battles, such as those involving the U’wa people, underscore the challenges these communities face in securing land rights and autonomy, they note. The 30×30 target offers an opportunity to change this dynamic, argue Mahaga and Izquierdo. It emphasizes recognizing Indigenous territories and ensuring their participation in decision-making processes. Success will hinge on the full and equitable inclusion of Indigenous peoples, alongside protections for land rights and traditional knowledge systems. Indigenous stewardship is not merely an alternative conservation method—it is a fundamental pathway to achieving global biodiversity targets. ℹ Mahaga (Bugotu People) is the Solomon Islands Minister for Environment, Climate Change, and Disaster Management. Izquierdo (Arhuaco People) is Technical Secretary at the National Commission of Indigenous Territories of Colombia. COP16 Colombia is underway in Cali. It’s been pretty spectacular so far. On Sunday I accompanied my friends at Life of Pachamama as they hosted the Encuentro de Jóvenes del Sur Global. It was inspiring and fun. Yesterday’s highlight was the programming at YAWA. Here’s a spoiler alert, a lot of the most innovative and important programming and meaningful discussions are happening here. Free and open to the public. As el Gobierno de Cambio would say, this is the people’s COP. I’m sharing our agenda for Monte Jungla. Last night’s documentary by Colombian filmmaker and activist Pirry about the Malpelo Flora and Fauna Sanctuary was spectacular. The best place to stay abreast of the programming is on YAWA’s ig account @YAWACALI. Come by and say hi.

The Magdalena River is a treasure. The MONTE JUNGLA team and our partners can't wait to show you more about our social and environmental impact efforts at #COP16 in Cali, #Colombia Here's the Yuma, Río Sonoro impact teaser for our impact campaign associated with the film and our "Cumbia Forest" which we'll showcase at COP16 on October 30 at the new YAWA Center for Science, Technology, and Art in Cali's San Fernando neighborhood https://lnkd.in/e-FKeK3i Yuma, Río Sonoro is a documentary about the Magdalena seen through the eyes of five musicians from the river's lower basin who, through their music, seek to preserve the memory of a forgotten river under environmental threat. It will premiere in 2025 with international circulation at film festivals, nationally in Colombia on Caracol Televisión, and later on digital platforms. Our impact campaign brings together 5 initiatives in three locations: the Zapatosa Marsh, Mompox, and the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta (the Great Marsh of Santa Marta). These include (1) Education, to recover knowledge and restore a sense of importance regarding the river and its wetlands and marshes among children and youth; (2) Cultural Strengthening via partnerships with festivals, active involvement in cultural processes, and local leadership; (3) Conservation of forests, wetlands, marshes, and mangroves in the river's lower basin; (4) Economic Development / Regenerative Tourism and Local Entrepreneurship; and (5) a Communication Campaign via social media, print media, radio, and TV. Last, but definitely not least, we want to be sure to express immense gratitude to Doc Society for grant support and advice, and to Kickstarter for boosting our efforts with their "Project We Love" badge! If you're interested in supporting, please don't hesitate to reach out and come check it out.

I’m warming up for the Biodiversity COP in Cali by working with the Fundación Camaná this week on management plans for three private nature reserves outside Colombia’s newly established Manacacias National Park in the department of Meta. The Nature Conservancy (TNC) — along with Parques Nacionales Naturales de Colombia — played a huge role in getting this park (the 61st National Park in Colombia) declared last year. Management of the new park will be a Hurculean task. Sustainable ranching, water management and ecotourism will all play big roles, as will a network of private reserves. For my friends and colleagues coming to the COP, I will see you soon in Cali! MONTE JUNGLA is helping manage the programming for the YAWA CENTER FOR CULTURE AND TECHNOLOGY. Stay tuned for an updated schedule of events and safe travels! RNSC LOMA ALTA pictured below
