72% of participants say the built environment industry is adapting quickly to implement the measures needed to achieve net zero. However, the overall findings mask significant variations across regions and roles. 94% of respondents in the UAE think the industry is adapting fast, compared with just 50% in China. Our collaboration with Mott MacDonald found that government action is a key differentiating factor. Regional policies worldwide are not clear cut in helping companies on their net zero journey. However, state-backed initiatives and certification schemes have a proven track record in driving sustainable and green building designs. But with only 17% of respondents saying they would progress at a pace dictated by government mandate, it is clear that the industry isn't relying on policies and governments to do all the heavy lifting. Our new report showcases how industry leaders have pivoted into action and embedded Net Zero into their DNA, benefitting the workforce, customers and communities. The built environment industry must play its part in combating climate change. There is a clear consensus that the journey to net zero is an issue requiring an industry-wide approach. Net zero is universally seen as highly ambitious, demanding strategic planning and resourcing to meet it. There is wide recognition that many measures, such as energy efficiency, bring cost savings. Yet, our global survey found that there are many more rewards to be highlighted on the industry's progress towards Net Zero. Joining the net zero journey brings benefits beyond cost-consciousness and environmental responsibility. It also nurtures trust among stakeholders through less tangible benefits, such as strengthening ‘green’ credentials, client loyalty and employee motivation.
