We at GAABS see #decisionmaking as a life skill. A mega-skill. A meta-skill. But what do people need to get better at it? 🤔We try to answer this with our newly-launched survey on work decisions. https://lnkd.in/gBBifcDQ We worked hard to produce it. And we will work harder to analyze and share the results. 👉Will you help by taking 10-15 minutes to answer the survey? 👉Will you share with your colleagues and network? 🎉There’s prizes to be won. And you might get to learn a bit more about yourself just by completing it… 🙏We appreciate your help. As always. #behavioralscience #decisionscience #work #management #Entrepreneurship #HumanResources #technology #education #Future

📣 Calling all decision makers! 🚀 We’re excited to announce the launch of a new GAABS research survey focusing on Decision Making in the Workplace!   ❓The survey’s purpose is to find out about people’s competency, confidence and approaches towards decision making in the workplace. We are seeking to gather meaningful data that we can share with the BeSci community and beyond. 🙌 We'd like to hear from anyone who is taking decisions in the workplace irrespective of role or seniority, industry or demographics (including you!).   🎁 The survey takes 10-15 minutes to complete and we offer a prize draw for participants!   🔗 Follow this link to access the survey → https://lnkd.in/eBDqt9Sz   Thank you to our collaborators for their invaluable feedback and support in the survey content and design: Sheheryar Banuri, Dr Umar Taj and Alliance for Decision Education!   #BehaviouralScience #DecisionMaking #Research #Survey

Here’s an open secret: 99% of the people around us pretend. They pretend to be able see the future. Or they pretend that everything they decide will work out. Or worse, they pretend that uncertainty doesn’t exist. But of course, deep down they know it does. And it makes some of them scared shitless. It makes others passive. It also makes for unhealthy blaming and game-playing in organisations. And all of that creates sub-optimal outcomes. Of course, this is all rather understandable. We actually can’t control the future. However, what we can do is to learn how to make quality decisions. And you can do that! The next cohort of The Decision-Making Studio’s “Decision Navigators” course is now open for enrolment! This isn’t your average “how to make decisions” course. We put a proven framework (called “FOCUS”) and techniques into practice. It’s not for pretenders. It’s for people who want to learn to make decisions, consistently - and feel calm and confident in doing so. Pulling this course together has been a labour of love. It’s gotten great reviews from past participants. And it keeps getting better! This time, it will be run via 2 2-hour live sessions. We’ll work on practical decision challenges you have. And, the insightful Melina Moleskis, PhD MBA will be helping me lead the course! You will get: -Calm and confidence – by knowing how to make great decisions in the face of uncertainty; -Practices, tools and techniques that can serve you for life; -An edge – professionally and personally, while others are still pretending. This is a great way to spend some of your organisation’s training budget, especially if your fiscal year ends in December. Don’t pretend. Decide. Details: 🗓 Part 1: Dec 5, 4–6pm UK 🗓 Part 2: Dec 12, 4–6pm UK 💸 £225 per person (£195 if you’re fast and grab it by Nov 15) 👥 Only 12 spots = real, live, in-your-face learning Sign up here: https://lnkd.in/efxmi2JK

When we have a tough decision to make - even if it's exciting - it can feel lonely. It's easy to think very few - if any - other people have had to make similar decisions. That's of course not true. In fact, we can learn a lot from others' decision dilemmas that we can apply to our own decisions or to the way in which we decide. That's part of the thinking behind "The Decision Clinic" that Melina Moleskis, PhD MBA and I recorded yesterday. We discussed three very different decision problems submitted to us. Melina and I live and breathe the practice, science and art of decision-making daily. We learned a lot from each other and from the problems shared with us. We think you might too. So, here is a clip from "The Decision Clinic". The full session is available as a podcast episode at The Decision-Making Studio podcast page here: https://lnkd.in/eigMukT4 A  video version is here: https://lnkd.in/e5tPc3jn And, if after listening you'd like to learn more about how to raise your decision-making game, I am thrilled that Melina and I are teaming up to deliver the next version of The Decision-Making Studio's "Decision Navigators" course and you can sign up for that here (currently offered at a reduced fee): https://lnkd.in/efxmi2JK

I’d hesitate if someone offered to help me with a decision. After all, what do they know about my particular situation? But as much as we tend to think our situations are unique, they’re not. The beauty of #decisionmaking is that, when you study it enough, there’s patterns, predictable errors and helpful frameworks around different types of decisions. If you want to get an expert perspective on one of your decisions, Ben Cattaneo (founder at The Decision-Making Studio) and myself are holding an “Ask Me Anything” podcast at the end of this month. Ready to think differently? Use this form to get your submission in anonymously by Oct 29th. https://lnkd.in/gpTQUcsy

𝗔𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 “𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰” Melina Moleskis, PhD MBA and I are teaming up for something we think will be fun, different and insightful! Introducing the "Decision Clinic". 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀, 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆? The concept is pretty simple: if you have an important decision to make and could use a bit of help – send it to the clinic! We will be spending some time at a recorded session at the end of the month to provide our thoughts on the decision dilemmas we receive. It’s a bit like an “Ask Me Anything” podcast. We will think about your decision, apply some decision-quality practices, discuss it, and share our thoughts with you and our audience. It's an opportunity to get a bit of objective and free expert advice - and to learn based on other decision dilemmas. 𝗔𝗻𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻? 𝗬𝗲𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 If you have a decision on your mind you’ve been struggling with – anything from what to get your other half for their birthday, to a big career move, to a strategic decision in your professional role, to something more general, a bit of decision quality can help. And, it might be useful to hear how to approach your decision by listening to others’ decision challenges. 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗼𝗻𝘆𝗺𝗼𝘂𝘀 We will keep all entries anonymous (unless you are ok with us using your first name - and we will only use that at the most). Or, you can submit a fake first name like “Dracula” or “Cleopatra” so that you know it’s you when we get to your decision. You can also “ask for a friend” if you prefer. You can use this form to get your submission in (we are closing this by Oct 29th): https://lnkd.in/e-pe6XM7 Or, you can DM us directly too. We will share “The Decision Clinic” on November 1st. See you at the clinic!

Probably one of the most common examples of how we "use" confirmation bias to make choices easy for us (easy but not good) 👇 It's tricky to recognize because after all we are using #data to make this #decision. But how are we using it? How many hats do we assign to a single data point?... #decisionmaking #behavioralscience

Putting the emphasis on "applied" and "relatable", I have converted my articles into 4-part series dedicated to specific industries, roles or problems. Always from the perspective of how can we make better #decisions, how can we improve on #problems better. These weeks, we focus on #insurance. But take a look anyway, irrespective of where you work - because as an esteemed reader recently told me "Your newsletter always jogs my thinking." #decisionmaking #behavioralscience

It's fantastic to see key #behavioraleconomics books being translated to #Greek! BUT, what we are still missing is ...the local context!!! :) I can't bring myself to discuss confirmation bias with examples from US politics or the Cuban missile crisis with my students. First of all, because I don't know enough about these (or care enough). And I can't expect my students to. Apart from the usual Olympiacos vs Panathinaikos examples, there's a need to draw much more from local context, local case studies and everyday experiences we can easily relate to. That is a project worth doing to complement these efforts to spread #behavioralscience and good #decisionmaking practices.

"In a lot of my work, some of which is with executives and top decision-makers, I’m startled by how often people don’t know how to make a decision, don’t know the rudiments to making good decisions. And I think the problem is they don’t go back to saying “what really matters”. – Robin Gregory, Decision Research #decisionmaking #decisionscience #behavioraldecisionscience
