🇪🇺 While on European level preparations to evaluate the success of the #European #Chips #Act are slowly underway, #developments on #MS level concerning microelectronics have kept myself and most of my peers quite busy in the recent weeks. Notably, the #recently #published #microelectronics & #semiconductor #strategies in #Finland and #Poland must be seen in Brussels as a bold signal that Europeans are ready and willing to continue the work on strengthening the region’s foothold in global #semiconductor #value, and #supply #chains. 🇫🇮 Looking at Finland: The released strategy by Microelectronics Finland (network of excellence in highest level of research and education) titled “Microelectronics in Finland - Research and Education Strategy” outlines the country's strategic roadmap for maintaining its competitive edge in microelectronics and aligning with the EU's sovereignty strategy. Key actions proposed in the Strategy include: ✅#Research: Increasing national R&D funding, leveraging EU Chips Act funding, and establishing a national microelectronics flagship. ✅#Education: Dedicated funding for PhD programs, setting joint education goals with industry and academia, and promoting international student pools. ✅#Strategic #Collaboration: Establishing a forum for long-term targets and maximizing international impact. The document emphasizes the need for #significant #investments in #microelectronics R&D&I, #skilled #workforce #development, and creating #favorable #legal and #business #conditions to attract specialized microelectronics companies to Finland. 🇵🇱 On the other hand, Poland’s “Policy for the Semiconductor Sector” comes with ambitious goals, including attracting #foreign #investors, developing domestic capabilities, and strengthening Poland's #technological #sovereignty. Building on 7 pillars of policy, the strategy tackles #infrastructure #investments, #workforce #development or #energy #availability for #chips #production. While (according to reports) generating less than 1% of the country’s GDP, Poland boasts approximately 250 companies operating in the semiconductor field – experiencing a rapid growth. A notable strength of Poland's unique competencies is in #integrated #photonics, particularly in #infrared #detection and #sensor #technologies, an advantage that might come in handy when pursuing cooperation with the neighboring countries. 🇪🇺 As Europe continues to face critical geopolitical challenges, the MS seem to actively broaden the scope of their interest to secure a stable, well-funded and attractive investment environment for the semiconductor industry.
