Linking space to user needs #EUSpace

O nás

The EU Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA) provides safe and performant space services, enabling synergies, EU innovation, sustainability, and security. To achieve this, EUSPA manages the Galileo and EGNOS programmes, develops markets for Copernicus services and data, is involved in secure satcom (GOVSATCOM & IRIS2), and carries out work in various areas targeted at Security, Research and Development and increasing space’s contribution to the EU Market. The Agency is also responsible for the security accreditation of all the components of the EU Space Programme. EUSPA also operates the #EUSST Front Desk, protecting more than 400 satellites from the risk of collision with space debris or other operational satellites. EUSPA, staffed with skilled professionals bringing relevant experience from the public and private sectors, is unique in contributing to one of the most important and ambitious projects ever undertaken by the EU. We are committed to implementing the EU Space Programme and turning the EU space ambitions into a reality.

  • Reporting from the Satellite-Based Services for Disaster Risk Management event in Barcelona Participants experienced the potential of Galileo Emergency Warning Satellite Service (EWSS), a satellite-based alert system that can send mass notifications to disaster zones, even when phone networks are unavailable. This demonstration marked its first occurrence in Spain and showcased the speed of message delivery, along with a follow-up confirming the end of the crisis. In emergencies where mobile networks are compromised, Galileo EWSS will provide vital information, guidance, and safety instructions, supporting smooth rescue operations. Another highlight of the event was a Search and Rescue (SAR) exercise. Supported by SASEMAR, Mossos d'Esquadra, and the fire brigade, two boats and a rescue helicopter were deployed for a real-time maritime operation. This exercise demonstrated the effectiveness of the Galileo SAR Service and its Return Link Service in maritime rescue operations. In 2024 alone, Spain saw 42 incidents with distress beacon activation, leading to the rescue of 172 people. Worldwide, there were 3,000 SAR RLS activations in the same year.   The future of emergency communication is taking shape, with EU Space and EUSPA driving innovations that mark an important step toward enhancing emergency response systems.

  • Safeguarding Farmland Birds from Above Birds play a critical role in maintaining the health of our ecosystems, especially in farmland areas. As indicators of biodiversity, farmland birds provide valuable insights into the state of the land, the effectiveness of agricultural practices, and the overall condition of our environment. Understanding the habitat needs of farmland birds is key to restoring variety in the landscape, which is crucial for ecosystem recovery. These birds depend on specific habitat features, and monitoring their well-being helps us improve these spaces. By aligning farming practices with the needs of birds, we can create healthier, more sustainable landscapes that benefit both wildlife and farming communities. One way to achieve this is through innovative projects like BirdWatch, a Copernicus-based service that uses satellite-enabled monitoring to improve habitat suitability for farmland birds. It helps evaluate and optimize greening measures, providing valuable insights freely accessible to farmers, stakeholders, and the public. By utilizing this data, BirdWatch supports ecological and economic sustainability and aids in monitoring compliance with biodiversity regulations. #EUSpace Credit: European Union, Copernicus Sentinel-2 imagery This satellite image of Malta highlights key nature reserves, vital for both migratory and resident birds. • GSS upgrade in Antarctica is successful This Ground Sensor Station (GSS) is part of the Galileo Sensor Station network, with antennas in remote locations worldwide. These small antennas monitor Galileo satellite signals and track their orbits in real-time. These measurements are sent to the Galileo Control Centres in Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany, and Fucino, Italy, where timing and orbit errors are identified and corrected. The corrections are transmitted via uplink stations (ULS) with 3-meter antennas, updating the satellites every 90 minutes to ensure high accuracy.
