👏 We are excited to share our new paper in Nature Communications revealing the atomic-resolution structure and conformations of glycans. It is the result of a great collaboration among scientists from CATRIN at Palacký University Olomouc, the University of Oxford, and FZU - Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences. Glycans, composed of covalently linked sugar units, are a major class of biopolymers essential to all known living organisms. Understanding their complex structures is crucial for advancing applications in fields ranging from biomedicine to materials science. In this study, we combined electrospray deposition in ultra-high vacuum with non-contact atomic force microscopy and theoretical calculations to unravel the structure of β-cyclodextrin at atomic-scale detail. This innovative approach enabled us to analyze the adsorption geometries and stabilizing hydrogen bonds of the molecule, revealing new insights into glycan analysis at the molecular level.
