Have You Ever Heard of the Moudawana? 🤔 The Moudawana is Morocco’s family code, covering laws on marriage, divorce, polygamy, inheritance, and child custody. Why Is This Relevant? Despite a 2004 reform aimed at improving women's rights, the Moudawana still permits child marriage and discriminates against children born out of wedlock, leaving many widows, divorced, or single mothers economically vulnerable. In 2022, King Mohammed VI announced a new reform to align the law with Morocco’s progressive 2011 constitution, and a commission has been drafting proposals since 2023. ⚖️ What’s Happening Now? The reform is the subject of intense debate, with feminist groups and progressive parties pushing for the abolition of child marriage, an end to polygamy, equal divorce rights, and changes to biased inheritance laws. They also advocate for secular laws, while conservative groups resist these changes, emphasizing the ongoing struggle between tradition and progress. What Lies Ahead? It remains uncertain how King Mohammed VI's proposed reforms will be received by the public—will they be a significant step forward or fall short of expectations? Today, on International Equal Pay Day, we recognize the global fight for equal pay for equal work. While progress has been made, there's still a long way to go. 👣⚖️ On a global scale, the gender pay gap is about 20%, meaning women earn only 80% of what men make. This gap is even bigger for women of color, those with disabilities, and mothers. In Morocco, which ranks among the lowest 10 countries in the 2024 Global Gender Gap Report, women still earn significantly less than men. The Democratic Association of Moroccan Women (ADFM) reports a staggering wage gap of 30%, with only 64% of women being paid for their work at all compared to 91% of men. Meanwhile, in Germany, women earn 18% less than men, with average hourly wages of €20.84 for women and €25.30 for men. Equal pay is a right, not a privilege.
