For decades, silicon has been the cornerstone of semiconductor technology. While silicon is ideal for many electronic applications, scientists and manufacturers have long sought more resilient alternatives for specific needs: high-voltage resistance, thermal stability, energy efficiency, wider bandgaps. This quest has met with varying degrees of success over the years, but one promising candidate has emerged: 𝗜𝗜𝗜-𝗡𝗶𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀. Notably, 𝗜𝗜𝗜-N𝗶𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗲 systems 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹 𝗮𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 - and their wide bandgaps enabling them to 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲 𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗲𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁. Aluminum Nitride (#AlN) and Aluminum Gallium Nitride (#AlGaN) systems, in particular, can be designed to efficiently emit #UV light, making them invaluable for critical applications such as #disinfection of air and surfaces, #water purification, curing, medical treatments such as wound healing, and infection prevention. With such versatile and impactful uses, III-nitrides stand at the forefront of technological advancement. Researchers from around the world are coming together at #IWN2024 from 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟯–𝟴 to share their latest advances in the field. We're excited to announce that Ewan Eadie, Medical Physicist and Head of Scientific Services for Photobiology at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, Scotland, will be presenting at our upcoming 🗓️ Deep-UV Light for Antiseptics & Hygiene Symposium (November 19-20, 2024). 📣 With his talk "𝘈𝘱𝘱𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘜𝘭𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘰𝘭𝘦𝘵 𝘌𝘹𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘓𝘪𝘮𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘙𝘦𝘢𝘭-𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥", Ewan will delve into the important role of the UV spectrum and how it relates to safe exposure limits for infection prevention. 🕴 Dr Ewan Eadie, PhD, is at the forefront of (Far-) UVC research, and is a Medical Physicist and Head of Scientific Services for Photobiology at Ninewells Hospital. He has a background in optical radiation dosimetry and the application of optical technologies for diagnosing and treating skin diseases. Ewan and the Photobiology Unit have been working closely with a multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional group of researchers that have utilized computational models and physical experiments to probe the benefits and limitations of Far-UVC. 🏆The research collaboration has published ten peer-reviewed articles, one of which has an online attention score in the top 5% of the 25 million outputs tracked by Altmetric. 𝐍𝐨 𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐬, 360° 𝐡𝐲𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: Boehringer Ingelheim is excited about using a new #UVC-#LED system for automating and validating disinfection. It is particularly useful for achieving germ-free conditions on smaller devices such as scanners, tablets, mobile phones, or tools, which pose a potential contamination risk in pharmaceutical development and production. The system was developed by Fraunhofer IOSB-AST around Thomas Westerhoff and colleagues, based on a disinfection device by PURION GmbH (all proud members of Advanced UV for Life - Association), in close collaboration with Boehringer Ingelheim. Boehringer Ingelheim is committed to improving the health for humans and animals. #UVC technology gives them a significant advantage by reducing chemical cleaners, further digitizing their production, and enhancing overall hygiene. BMW has taken a step towards a cleaner driving experience with the recent introduction of their UV-C disinfection system (part number 63315a56991, priced under €200). This feature utilizes 2x 275nm UVLEDs to eliminate up to 99.9% of viruses and bacteria within the cabin in just 10 minutes, according to their advertisements. Safety is given, as the LEDs automatically deactivate when someone is in the vehicle. Dr. Neysha Lobo Ploch, a leading expert in #UVLED technology, will be joining us as speaker at the Deep-UV Workshop in Berlin. Neysha heads the Prototype Engineering Lab at Ferdinand-Braun-Institut, Leibniz-Institut für Höchstfrequenztechnik. There, she's been at the forefront of developing efficient UV LEDs for various applications, including medical technology. From 2008 to 2021, Neysha led the development of efficient UV LEDs using the semiconductor family of group-III nitrides (AlN-GaN-InN) as part of the Joint Lab GaN Optoelectronics. These innovative devices were designed specifically for applications in disinfection, medical technology, plant cultivation, and environmental monitoring. Since becoming Head of the Prototype Engineering Lab in 2021, Neysha has focused on bridging the gap between cutting-edge research and practical applications. She offers companies real-world functional models and prototypes featuring LEDs and laser diodes fabricated at FBH. The high-level integration yet easy-to-handle prototypes are developed in close collaboration with partners in the application fields to ensure that all necessary requirements are met for field tests.
