With a mission to solve the mobility challenges of tomorrow and drive forward progressive development in the automotive industry, Aiways was founded as a start-up in 2017 by the Chinese entrepreneurs Samuel Fu and Gary Gu. Development of the U5 started with a blank sheet of paper and the desire to make electric driving as enjoyable, exciting and affordable as possible. From ordering to use ⚡ A few short years later, the global Aiways network comprises a highly innovative, digitalised plant in Shangrao (China) with an annual capacity of 300,000 vehicles, an R&D centre and a design centre in Shanghai (China), a battery factory in Changshu (China) and the European Sales Centre in Munich.     One of the most common questions: Is there enough electricity for electric vehicles? The answer is not simple, but we want to share some facts and insights with you. ⚡ Based on the current situation of the electricity market in Europe, there are no major problems expected in the medium term. For example, if there were an additional 10 million electric cars on the roads in Germany, this would mean an additional electricity demand of 5.6 percent or 30 TWh. And you have to know: in 2020, an electricity surplus of 18 TWh was exported. This would have been enough to power six million electric cars. In addition, continuous efficiency improvements and energy savings are likely to compensate for some of the additional demand for electromobility. 🔋 In the past, electricity generation was based on predictable and plannable consumption forecasts. In the future, however, it is likely to become more difficult to cover the base load and the fluctuating electricity demand "just in time". In addition to the expansion of wind and photovoltaic plants, storage solutions will therefore also be necessary. 🏠 On the other hand, the number of electric vehicles increases the risk of local grid overload. For this reason, a reporting obligation for charging stations at home up to 11 kW of power and an approval obligation for more than 12 kW have been introduced. A controllability of charging processes for grid stabilization comparable to PV systems is in preparation. With the knowledge of when consumers draw electricity at the same time, the distribution network operators can strengthen, expand and coordinate charging processes over the night hours in the future.     Do you know the difference between AC and DC charging? If not, don't worry, we are here to explain it to you in simple terms. ℹ️ AC stands for alternating current, which means the electric current changes direction periodically. This is the type of current that comes from the grid and the sockets in your home or office. DC stands for direct current, which means the electric current flows in one direction only. This is the type of current that is stored in batteries, such as the one in your EV. ⚡ To charge an EV, you need to convert AC power to DC power, because the battery can only accept DC power. This conversion can happen either inside or outside the car. If it happens inside the car, it is called AC charging. If it happens outside the car, it is called DC charging. 🏠 AC charging is the most common and convenient way to charge your EV at home or work, because you can use a standard socket or a dedicated wallbox. However, AC charging is also slower, because the car's onboard charger has a limited power capacity. 🔋 DC charging is the fastest way to charge your EV, because it bypasses the car's onboard charger and feeds DC power directly to the battery. DC charging is also more complex and expensive, because it requires a special charging station with a built-in converter. DC charging is usually found near highways or at public charging stations, where you need to recharge quickly. At Aiways, we offer both AC and DC charging options for our customers, so you can choose the best one for your needs and preferences. Our Aiways U5 SUV, for example, can charge up to 90 kW with DC power, which means you can get 80% of battery in just 30 minutes.
