𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻? The “green standards jungle” just got denser 👇 This week, Brazil introduced a tax credit and incentive scheme system for “low carbon” hydrogen projects. But here's the thing: their "low carbon" standard allows up to 7kg CO2 equivalent per kg of hydrogen produced. That’s a whopping 6kg more than the strictest standards currently in place. It also builds an a new, different GHG calculation methodology. The lack of harmonisation in GHG calculation methodologies and emissions thresholds is a hurdle in the burgeoning power-to-X market. Why is this a problem? 1) 𝐋𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐨𝐟 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 = 𝐨𝐛𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐚 𝐥𝐢𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐝 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭. We’re talking about molecules a) set to be traded internationally b) whose market price is set to be indexed on carbon intensity. 2) 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 = 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐤𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧𝐰𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 >> This underscores the need for robust traceability systems, a necessity for scalable certification worflows. 𝗙𝗮𝘀𝘁-𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗶𝘁-𝗮𝗻𝗱-𝘄𝗮𝗶𝘁? It seems reasons are piling up to think the fast-movers are playing their cards right. Or at least: pioneers might well be rewarded to taking on early-mover risks. ➡ Here’s why: 𝟭. 𝗜𝗳 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗹 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟴: 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗛𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗻 (𝗥𝗙𝗡𝗕𝗢) 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘀 Early hydrogen producers that are operative before 2028 can benefit from the transition phase of the RFNBO Additionality requirement until 2038. While this regulation ensures that increased hydrogen production goes hand in hand with new renewable electricity generation capacities, during this transition phase, producers are not yet required to secure PPAs with new, unsupported renewable energy generation capacity. 𝟮. 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟯𝟬𝘀: 𝗨𝗽 𝘁𝗼 +𝟬.𝟳𝟰€/𝗸𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗘𝗨 𝗘𝗧𝗦 𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 Hydrogen producers are now part of the EU ETS and can receive free emission allowances from 2025 on. According to analytics from Veyt, to a producer of 50,000 tonnes of green hydrogen, the opportunity of selling those allowance equal a value of €37m annually by 2027! Allowances will decrease from 2030. And so do potential sales revenues, so jumping on the bandwagon early pays off! 𝟯. 𝗨𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗹 𝗤𝟰 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰: 𝗘𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗮 𝟮.𝟮𝗯𝗻€ 𝘀𝘂𝗯𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗨 𝗛𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗻 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝗮𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 The EU hydrogen bank supports the scale-up of green hydrogen on several levels. On the domestic level, hydrogen production is funded by fixed-premiums in €/kg of green hydrogen. €800m have already been auctioned and results were just published. The next auction round is expected to start this autumn, allocating up to €2.2bn. Projects in Germany are eligible for a top-up auction-as-a-service providing further €350m funds. 𝟰. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗮 𝗽𝘂𝘀𝗵 𝗼𝗳 [𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗗𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲] Recently, Germany launched the first European auction for CCfDs. Selected companies will be funded for 15 years by a volume of €4bn. In the near future, several European countries will follow and host CfD auctions, amongst them Austria, Italy, Netherlands, and France. More: See our post on EU market making mechanisms! 𝟱. 𝗨𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗹 𝟮𝟬𝟯𝟱: 𝗗𝗼𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗥𝗙𝗡𝗕𝗢 𝗮𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝘂𝗲𝗹 𝗘𝗨 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 All ships with gross tonnage above 5,000 are affected by the FuelEU Maritime Regulation, which targets a GHG reduction of 80% by 2050 compared to 2020.
